چکیده

This manuscript describes a spatial (multiple sites across a precipitation gradient) and temporal (tree rings) analysis of how forest structure and function (morphology, chemistry, growth) relate to climate stress in the eastern Cascades, Oregon, USA. This is an interesting topic with clear relevance for a broad range of scientists, managers, and policymakers. The ms is extremely well written, with appropriate references, and generally clear. On the one hand, the larger lessons from this study are unsurprising and have been known a long time: water availability is a strong control on forest structure

Water limitations on forest carbon cycling and conifer traits along a steep climatic gradient in the Cascade Mountains, Oregon

Severe droughts occurred in the western United States during recent decades, and continued human greenhouse gas emissions are expected to exacerbate warming and drying in this region. We investigated the role of water availability in shaping forest carbon cycling and morphological traits in the eastern Cascade Mountains, Oregon, focusing on the transition from low-elevation, dry western juniper...

Vulnerability to forest loss through altered postfire recovery dynamics in a warming climate in the Klamath Mountains.

In the context of ongoing climatic warming, certain landscapes could be near a tipping point where relatively small changes to their fire regimes or their postfire forest recovery dynamics could bring about extensive forest loss, with associated effects on biodiversity and carbon-cycle feedbacks to climate change. Such concerns are particularly valid in the Klamath Region of northern California...

Transpiration and stomatal conductance across a steep climate gradient in the southern Rocky Mountains

Transpiration (E) is regulated over short time periods by stomatal conductance (Gs) and over multi-year periods by treeand stand-structural factors such as leaf area, height and density, with upper limits ultimately set by climate. We tested the hypothesis that tree structure, stand structure and Gs together regulate E per ground area (Eg) within climatic limits using three sites located across...

Climatic and biophysical controls on conifer species distributions in mountain forests of Washington State, USA

Aim The purpose of this study was to quantify relationships between conifer species distributions and climatic and biophysical variables, in order to provide better insight into the potential for redistribution of species on the landscape in response to climatic change. Location Data are from 10,653 georeferenced sites in Washington State, USA, along a longitudinal gradient from west of the cre...
