Strict Comparison and Weak Necessity: The Case of Epistemic Yào in Mandarin Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
The epistemic use of yào in Mandarin Chinese, often translated as ‘should’ in English, shows certain interesting peculiarities. In this paper, I first describe the empirical properties of epistemic yào. The occurrence of epistemic yào is restricted only to certain comparative constructions, but forbidden in other degree constructions or non-degree constructions. It cannot appear above or below negation. It has a quantificational force stronger than that of existential modals, yet weaker than that of strong necessity modals. It can appear with another epistemic modal ȳınggāi, which has a very similar modal flavor and an identical quantificational force. When co-occurring, however, the two epistemic modals have to follow a strict word order. Next, I examine whether the above empirical properties of epistemic yào arise as lexical idiosyncrasies, from syntax, semantics, or their interface. Wherever relevant in the discussion, I compare epistemic yào to the (near-)synonymous ȳınggāi. The epistemic use of yào in Mandarin Chinese may constitute an interesting case of interand cross-linguistic variation in natural language modality.

Dynamic Semantics for Intensification and Epistemic Necessity: The Case of Yídìng and Shìbì in Mandarin Chinese
Functioning as adverbials, yídìng and shìbì in Mandarin Chinese can either express intensification or (strong) epistemic necessity. In addition, context influences their semantics. Hence, dynamic semantics are proposed for them. An information state is a pair , where s is a proposition and A is an affirmative ordering. Yídìng() performs update on an information state: A is updated with...

متن کاملSpectral Analysis of Mandarin Chinese Sibilant Fricatives
This paper investigates the spectral aspects of Mandarin Chinese sibilant [s̪, ʂ, ɕ] in three vowel context /a, i, u/. Three male and three female speakers of Mandarin Chinese were recorded. To ensure good spectral estimates, frication noise was analyzed using multitaper analysis. For comparison, one female speaker of Polish was analyzed in the same way. A strict ordering was found among Mandari...
متن کاملStrict fixed points of '{C}iri'{c}-generalized weak quasicontractive multi-valued mappings of integral type
Many authors such as Amini-Harandi, Rezapour et al., Kadelburg et al., have tried to find at least one fixed point for quasi-contractions when $alphain[frac{1}{2}, 1)$ but no clear answer exists right now and many of them either have failed or changed to a lighter version. In this paper, we introduce some new strict fixed point results in the set of multi-valued '{C}iri'{c}-gener...
