Effect of Iron Oxides on Positive a N D Negative Charges I N Clays and Soils

چکیده
The contribution of free iron oxides to positive and negative charge distribution has been studied on soils and synthetic kaolinite-iron oxide complexes over a wide range ofpH values. The charge on the iron oxides is pH-dependent, being positive at low and negative at high pH values, respectively, and accounts for a considerable proportion of the pHdependent negative charge in soils. Iron oxides increase the buffer capacities of all soils and kaolinite-iron oxide complexes. A considerable proportion of the surface of the clay fraction is covered by iron oxides, resulting in a decreased negative charge on the clay. The isoelectric points of iron oxides in soils are considerably higher than those reported for pure iron oxides. A number of the soils studied were isoelectric at their field pH values, so that under field conditions they would be expected to be extremely infertile. Evidence is presented to show that kaolinite has a permanent negative charge, confirming the view that isomorphous substitutions occur.

Iron Oxide-clay Mineral Association in Brazilian Oxisols: a Magnetic Separation Study
-Selected Brazilian Oxisols were sampled and submitted to high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) to study the iron oxide-clay mineral associations. The soils, derived from four different parent materials, have mineralogy dominated mostly by hematite, goethite, and kaolinite. Gibbsite appears in most soil samples. The high-gradient magnetic separation showed good separation for some soils, as ...

In a four-year experiment, five nitrogen rates (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N ha-1) were tested over irrigated sugar beets grown on clays, underMediterranean conditions, in centralGreece. There, sugar beets are commonly grown under water shortages, high temperatures and high soil Na concentrations. Contrary to previous reports, N rates did not affect significantly population density (as asse...

متن کاملSoil-Saprolite Profiles Derived from Mafic Rocks in the North Carolina Piedmont: II. Association of Free Iron Oxides with Soils and Clays
The association of free Fe oxides with soils and clays from two Enon sandy loam (Ultic Hapludalfs, fine, mixed, thermic) soil saprolite profiles was studied. Goethite was the dominant Fe oxide identified. Lepidocrocite was detected in trace amounts in some sam ples. Fe/clay ratios were highest in the epipedons of these soils suggesting the concentrating of Fe oxides as a result of alumino silic...

This paper aims to present an experimental and numerical study on the effect of wetting-drying cycles and plasticity index on the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of lime stabilized clayey soils. The numerical analysis was carried out based on finite element method for comparison between results of experimental and numerical studies. Three clays with different plasticity indices were mixed with v...
