Combined satellite- and ULS-derived sea-ice flux in the Weddell Sea

چکیده
Several years of daily microwave satellite ice-drift are combined with moored Upward Looking Sonar (ULS) ice-drafts into an ice volume flux record at points along a flux gate across the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Monthly ice transport varies at the mooring locations from a maximum export of 0.4 m s near Joinville Island to -0.4 ms imported along the Fimbul and Riiser Larsen ice shelf margins. Winter peaks are observed at each end of the flux gate, where high concentrations of deformed ice are advected in and out of the basin along the coastline. The central gyre in contrast exhibits negligible seasonality and much smaller volume transports. Results indicate that gyre dynamics dominate net ice volume flux by controlling deformation and advection. During the period of overlapping ULS operation, the mean monthly integrated ice export west of the gyre center is 59 x 10 m s, and the import in the East Wind Drift is -17 x 10 m s. ULS data are compared with ERS satellite radar image pixel values to obtain an empirical relationship between ice thickness and the rate of change of backscatter with incidence angle. Resulting proxy ice-thickness data are combined with SSM/Iderived ice velocities to obtain seasonally varying estimates of net ice volume flux from 199298. Significant interannual variability is observed in ice volume flux expressed as freshwater transport. A maximum of 0.054 Sv is observed in 1992 with a minimum of 0.015 Sv in spring 1996. A six-year mean transport of 0.032 Sv is observed. Maximum seasonal ice export occurs in July 1992 with a minimum in November 1996. The ten-year mean area flux is 30 x 10 m s . Interannual variations in net volume flux closely follow variations in area flux with summer minima in 1990/91 and 1996/97. Maximum area transport occurs in 1991, and although this predates the ERS-1 scatterometer data, ice thickness estimates by Harms et al. confirm 1991 as a decadal peak in net integrated freshwater transport.

Observations of ice thickness and frazil ice in the St. Lawrence Island polynya from satellite imagery, upward looking sonar, and salinity/temperature moorings
[1] For the 1999 winter, this paper examines the behavior of the Bering Sea St. Lawrence Island polynya using a combination of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), RADARSAT synthetic aperture radar (SAR), meteorological data, over-winter moored upward looking sonars (ULS) and SeaBird salinity/temperature sensors. We define a thermal ice thickness from the AVHRR retrieval of ice sur...
متن کاملICESat observations of seasonal and interannual variations of sea-ice freeboard and estimated thickness in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica (2003–2009)
Sea-ice freeboard heights for 17 ICESat campaign periods from 2003 to 2009 are derived from ICESat data. Freeboard is combined with snow depth from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) data and nominal densities of snow, water and sea ice, to estimate sea-ice thickness. Sea-ice freeboard and thickness distributions show clear seasonal variations that reflec...
متن کاملInterannual Variability in Weddell Sea Ice from Ers Wind Scatterometer
ERS-1/2 SAR and Wind Scatterometer data are analyzed together with DMSP SSM/I microwave radiometer data to investigate interannual variability in Weddell Sea ice and summer melt signatures during the period 1992-1997. Simultaneous SAR and Scatterometer images were obtained during a February 1995 cruise of the H.M.S. Endurance and aerial photographs collected for validation of the satellite obse...
متن کاملExplaining the Weddell Polynya--a large ocean eddy shed at Maud Rise.
Satellite observations have shown the occasional occurrence of a large opening in the sea-ice cover of the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, a phenomenon known as the Weddell Polynya. The transient appearance, position, size, and shape of the polynya is explained here by a mechanism by which modest variations in the large-scale oceanic flow past the Maud Rise seamount cause a horizontal cyclonic eddy to...
متن کاملA Possible Link between the Weddell Polynya and the Southern Annular Mode*
Shortly after the advent of the first imaging passive microwave sensor on board a research satellite an anomalous climate feature was observed within the Weddell Sea. During the years 1974–1976, a 250 10 km area within the seasonal sea ice cover was virtually free of winter sea ice. This feature, the Weddell Polynya, was created as sea ice formation was inhibited by ocean convection that inject...
