The Radial Velocity Distribution of Class I and Flat - Spectrum Protostars ∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze radial velocities for a sample of 31 Class I and flat spectrum protostars in TaurusAuriga, ρ Ophiuchi and Serpens for evidence of the global dynamical state of extremely young stellar populations buried within parental molecular clouds. Comparing the radial velocity of each protostar to that of the local CO gas, we are able to constrain the one dimensional radial velocity dispersion of Class I and flat spectrum objects to ∼2.5 km sec or below. This upper limit to the protostellar velocity dispersion is consistent with the velocity dispersions of surrounding CO gas which we measure to be ∼ 1.4 km sec, suggesting that the motions of protostars and local CO gas are dynamically linked and dominated by the gravitational potential of the molecular cloud. However, the upper limit on the protostellar velocity dispersion could still allow for slightly inflated motions of protostars relative to the local molecular gas. Four of the protostars analyzed appear to have velocities more than 3 σ (7.5 km sec) away from the central local CO gas velocity while showing spectroscopic indicators of youth and accretion such as H2 emission, HI Br γ emission, or K band continuum veiling. These radial velocity outliers may represent protostellar spectroscopic binaries or ejected cluster members. High Resolution Near-Infrared Spectra of Protostars
We present new high resolution (R ≃ 21, 000) near-infrared (λ = 2μm) spectroscopic observations of a sample of Class I and flat-spectrum protostellar objects in the ρ Ophiuchi dark cloud. None of the five Class I spectra show CO v = 0 – 2 absorption features, consistent with high K-band continuum veilings, 4 . rk . 20 and fast stellar rotation, assuming that the underlying protostellar photosph...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum Content and Evolution of Class I and Flat-spectrum Protostars
We report on the angular momentum content of heavily embedded protostars based on our analysis of the projected rotation velocities (v sin is) of 38 Class I/flat spectrum young stellar objects recently presented by Doppmann et al. (2005). After correcting for projection effects, we find that infraredselected Class I/flat spectrum objects rotate significantly more quickly (median equatorial rota...
متن کاملThe Physical Natures of Class I and Flat - Spectrum Protostellar
We present high resolution (R ≃ 18,000), high signal-to-noise, 2 µm spectra of 52 infrared-selected Class I and flat-spectrum young stellar objects in the Taurus-Auriga, ρ Ophiuchi, Serpens, Perseus, and Corona Australis dark clouds. We detect key absorption lines in 41 objects and fit synthetic spectra generated from pre-main sequence models to deduce the effective temperatures, surface gravit...
متن کاملInvestigating the Nature of Variable Class I and Flat Spectrum Protostars Using 2-4μm Spectroscopy
In this study I present new K and L-band infrared photometry and 2-4μm spectra of ten Class I and flat spectrum stars forming within the Taurus dark cloud complex. Nine sources have H2 v=0-1 S(1) emission, and some show multiple H2 emission features in their K-band spectra. Photospheric absorptions characteristic to low mass stars are detected in five of the targets, and these stars were fit wi...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Detection of a Stellar-like Photosphere in an Accreting Protostar
We present high-resolution (R ≃ 18, 000), high signal-to-noise 2 μm spectra of two luminous, X-ray flaring Class I protostars in the ρ Ophiuchi cloud acquired with the NIRSPEC spectrograph of the Keck II telescope. We present the first spectrum of a highly veiled, strongly accreting protostar which shows photospheric absorption features and demonstrates the stellar nature of its central core. W...
