Uncertainty Analysis of Calculated Extinction From Apparent Contrast Measurements

چکیده
1.0 Introduction The contrast of a given feature at a specific wavelength of light is determined by the radiance of that feature and the radiance of the background or adjacent feature against which it is viewed. Target/Sky contrast (C) is defined as the ratio of the difference between the feature (target) and the background sky radiance to the background sky radiance: where N stands for radiance, t and s represent target and background sky respectively. Two important definitions are: Inherent Contrast: C o The contrast of the target at zero distance Apparent Contrast: C r The contrast of the target as viewed at a distance r For an atmospheric sight path with average an extinction coefficient = b ext , the apparent contrast (C r) to an observer who is viewing an object of inherent contrast (C o) is rigorously defined: where s N o and s N r represent the radiance of the identical sky reference position as measured at the target location (distance = 0) and at the observation point (distance = r) respectively (Malm, 1979). Equation 2 can be rearranged to solve for b ext : Equation 3 can be simplified by defining a sky radiance ratio as r s o s N N N R / = : () N N N C s s t − = (1) () r b N N C C ext r s o s o r − = exp (2) r o r s o s ext C C N N r b ln 1 (3) = r o N ext C C R r b ln 1 (4)

Bayesian assessment of uncertainty in aerosol size distributions and index of refraction retrieved from multiwavelength lidar measurements.
We investigate the assessment of uncertainty in the inference of aerosol size distributions from backscatter and extinction measurements that can be obtained from a modern elastic/Raman lidar system with a Nd:YAG laser transmitter. To calculate the uncertainty, an analytic formula for the correlated probability density function (PDF) describing the error for an optical coefficient ratio is deri...
متن کاملObtaining Calibrated Marine Aerosol Extinction Measurements Using Horizontal Lidar Measurements, Differential Lidar-Target Measurements and A Polar Nephelometer
Lidars are ideal for mapping the spatial distribution of aerosol concentrations, however efforts to convert the lidar measurements into estimates of the aerosol extinction or scattering coefficient are usually complicated. The difficulties arise from the uncertainty in the aerosol backscatter-to-extinction ratio and the lidar calibration. In marine conditions with little absorption, the aerosol...

متن کاملIn Vitro Study of Acriflavine Interaction with Horseradish Peroxidase C
Acriflavine (3,6-diaminoacridine) is an anticeptic drug developed in 1912. Previous research has focused on investigation of the intercalating features of acriflavine, but little is known about its interaction with proteins. Drug-receptor interaction is of major interest in clinical science. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of acriflavine to induce alterations in conform...
متن کاملAngular diameters, fluxes and extinction of compact planetary nebulae: further evidence for steeper extinction towards the Bulge
We present values for angular diameter, flux and extinction for 70 Galactic planetary nebulae observed using narrow band filters. Angular diameters are derived using constant emissivity shell and photoionization line emission models. The mean of the results from these two models are presented as our best estimate. Contour plots of 36 fully resolved objects are included and the low intensity con...
