Schulz Department o/Chemical Engineering, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 (Received 1 September 1989; accepted 30 October 1989) CH3 0D decomposition has been studied over the stoichiometric, nonpolar (111) and polar, copper-terminated (100) surfaces ofCu2 O. Thermal desorption studies for monolayer coverages of methanol at 90 K show similar conversions, but the product distributions vary significantly, indicating a structure sensitive reaction. The (111) surface shows a maximum selectivity for complete oxidative dehydrogenation to CO, while the ( 100) surface shows a maximum selectivity for partial dehydrogenation to CH2 O. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data are consistent with a decomposition pathway which proceeds through a methoxy intermediate for both surfaces. Possible origins for the structure sensitivity are discussed.

The Preparation, structural characterization, optical properties, and antibacterial activity of the CuO/Cu2O nanocomposites prepared by the facile thermal decomposition of a new copper precursor
Objective(s): In this study, a new copper precursor was prepared from the combination of Cu(CH3COO)2∙H2O (1 g in 5 ml of methanol) and benzoic acid (1 g in 5 ml of methanol) at room temperature. Following that, the copper precursor was calcined at the temperature of 500ºC and 600ºC for 1.5 hours to form CuO/Cu2O nanocomposites with the code numbers of CuO-1 and CuO-2, respectively. Materi...
متن کاملStructure-Dependent Electrocatalytic Properties of Cu2O Nanocrystals for Oxygen Reduction Reaction
Cu2O nanocrystals with different morphologies are synthesized via a reductive solution route by controlling the reaction time and using different capping agents. Introducing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leads to nearly monodispersed Cu2O nanocubes with 40 nm size and dominant {100} crystal planes. With prolonged reaction time, the nanocubes are truncated and transformed into sphere-like nanocrys...
متن کاملBinary [Cu2O/MWCNT] and ternary [Cu2O/ZnO/MWCNT] nanocomposites: formation, characterization and catalytic performance in partial ethanol oxidation.
Cuprous oxide agglomerates composed of 4-10 nm Cu2O nanoparticles were deposited on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and on ZnO/MWCNTs to give binary [Cu2O/MWCNT] and ternary [Cu2O/ZnO/MWCNT] composites. Di-aqua-bis[2-(methoxyimino)propanoato]copper Cu[O2CCCH3NOMe](2)·2H2O 1 in DMF was used as single source precursor for the deposition of nanoscaled Cu2O. The precursor decomposes either in...
متن کاملEpitaxial Growth of Three-Dimensionally Mesostructured Single- Crystalline Cu2O via Templated Electrodeposition
Significant efforts have been made over the past few decades to realize functional three-dimensional photonic crystal devices including zero-threshold lasers, waveguides, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar cells; however, progress has been limited because of difficulties in creating three-dimensional photonic crystals from single-crystal materials. Most have been formed from polycrystallin...
متن کاملHeteroepitaxial Cu2O thin film solar cell on metallic substrates
Heteroepitaxial, single-crystal-like Cu2O films on inexpensive, flexible, metallic substrates can potentially be used as absorber layers for fabrication of low-cost, high-performance, non-toxic, earth-abundant solar cells. Here, we report epitaxial growth of Cu2O films on low cost, flexible, textured metallic substrates. Cu2O films were deposited on the metallic templates via pulsed laser depos...
