Mental Representation of Spatial Movement Parameters in Dance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Via training, dance experts develop special experience-based embodied representations of body and movement. Professional dancers, amateurs and novices sorted central functional nodes of two dance movements according to their spatial equivalence. Results of a hierarchical cluster analysis and classification probabilities revealed movement-specific differences in mental representations related to skilllevel. Cluster solutions of experts reflected functional structures, with adequate spatial parameters associated to the main movement phases. Amateurs achieved similar results only for the less complex movement, whereas novices showed nonfunctional results. The findings suggest that only dance experts’ distinct embodied representations of dance movements include information about body-centered spatial parameters.

Synthesis of Variable Dancing Styles Based on A Compact Spatiotemporal Representation of Dance
Dance as a complex expressive form of motion is able to convey emotion, meaning and social idiosyncrasies that opens channels for non-verbal communication, and promotes rich cross-modal interactions with music and the environment. As such, realistic dancing characters may incorporate crossmodal information and variability of the dance forms through compact representations that may describe the ...
متن کاملA parameterizable spatiotemporal representation of popular dance styles for humanoid dancing characters
Dance movements are a complex class of human behavior which convey forms of non-verbal and subjective communication that are performed as cultural vocabularies in all human cultures. The singularity of dance forms imposes fascinating challenges to computer animation and robotics, which in turn presents outstanding opportunities to deepen our understanding about the phenomenon of dance by means ...
متن کاملSpatial Representation and Production and Reproduction of the Mental Image: Lefebvre’s Trialectic Approach
Lefebvre's theory of space production has been very much considered. In particular, it is important to integrate it systematically into the categories of city and space as a comprehensive and comprehensible social theory. Lefebvre's theory of space production has been remarkable in recent years and has responded well to the many questions posed in the early 1970s. Lefebvre in his trialectic in ...
متن کاملRepresentation of Samba dance gestures, using a multi-modal analysis approach
In this paper we propose an approach for the representation of dance gestures in Samba dance. This representation is based on a video analysis of body movements, carried out from the viewpoint of the musical meter. Our method provides the periods, a measure of energy and a visual representation of periodic movement in dance. The method is applied to a limited universe of Samba dances and music,...
متن کاملPoints in mental space : an interdisciplinary study of imagery in movement creation
As part of a programme of research that is developing tools to enhance choreographic practice, an interdisciplinary team of cognitive scientists, neuroscientists and dance professionals collaborated on two studies examining the mental representations used to support movement creation. We studied choreographer Wayne McGregor’s approach to movement creation through tasking, in which he asks dance...
