Jamming Transition

چکیده
Jamming phenomena arise in many systems. Granular materials, glasses and colloidal systems are just a few examples of it. This paper summerizes current effort of unifying these phenomena into a single jamming phase transition. Two examples, granular materials and colloidal suspensions, are discussed in detail to illusrate the idea. The strengths and weaknesses of this picture are addressed at the end of the paper.

Statistical Physics of the Jamming Transition: The Search for Simple Models
We investigate universal features of the jamming transition in granular materials, colloids and glasses. We show that the jamming transition in these systems has common features: slowing of response to external perturbation, and the onset of structural heterogeneities.
متن کاملTransition from rolling to jamming in thin granular layers.
We study the granular jamming transition for sheared layers of spherical beads ranging in thickness from 1 to 3 times the grain diameter d. As the layer thickness increases slightly above d, the measured friction jumps discontinuously from 0.02 to >0.1, marking the transition from rolling to jamming. Above a critical layer thickness for jamming, the effective granular pressure displays a power ...
متن کاملMultiscaling at Point J: jamming is a critical phenomenon.
We analyze the jamming transition that occurs as a function of increasing packing density in a disordered two-dimensional assembly of disks at zero temperature for "Point J" of the recently proposed jamming phase diagram. We measure the total number of moving disks and the transverse length of the moving region, and find a power law divergence as the packing density increases toward a critical ...
متن کاملRigidity of a Vibrated Amorphous Bi-Dimensional Packing of Grains
The Jamming transition can be seen as a general phenomenon occurring whenever a dense assembly of “things” gets stuck and resists to an externally applied shear stress. The mechanical response of a vibrated amorphous bi-dimensional packing of grains close to the Jamming transition is investigated. Stress is applied to the media through a constant torque rheometer while surface fraction is tuned...
متن کاملCan the jamming transition be described using equilibrium statistical mechanics?
When materials such as foams or emulsions are compressed, they display solid behaviour above the so-called ‘jamming’ transition. Because compression is done out of equilibrium in the absence of thermal fluctuations, jamming appears as a new kind of a nonequilibrium phase transition. In this proceedings paper, we suggest that tools from equilibrium statistical mechanics can in fact be used to de...
