Hedging Demand and Supply Risks in the Newsvendor Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider a single-period inventory model where there are risks associated with the uncertainty in demand as well as supply. Furthermore, the randomness in demand and supply is correlated with the nancial markets. Recent literature provides ample evidence on this issue. The inventory manager may then exploit this correlation and manage his risks by investing in a portfolio of nancial instruments. The decision problem therefore includes not only the determination of the optimal ordering policy, but also the selection of the optimal portfolio at the same time. We analyze this problem in detail and provide a risk-sensitive approach to inventory management where one considers both the mean and the variance of the resulting cash ow. The analysis results in some interesting and explicit characterizations on the structure of the optimal policy.

Hedging Commodity Procurement in a Bilateral Supply Chain
This paper explores the merits of hedging stochastic input costs (i.e., reducing the risk of adverse changes in costs) in a decentralized, risk neutral supply chain. Specifically, we consider a generalized version of the well-known ‘selling-to-the-newsvendor’ model in which both the upstream and the downstream firms face stochastic input costs. The firms’ operations are intertwined – i.e., the ...
متن کاملReservoir Operation During Droughts
Drought is an inevitable part of the world’s climate. It occurs in wet as well as in dry regions. Therefore, planning for drought and mitigating its impacts is essential. In this study, a hedging rule is developed using the zero/one mixed integer-programming approach. Furthermore, some procedures are introduced to ease the computational burden inherent in integer programming. Hedging rules are ...
متن کاملOptimal inventory control in a multi-period newsvendor problem with non-stationary demand
The optimal control of inventory in supply chains plays a key role in the competiveness of a corporation. The inventory cost can account for half of company’s logistics cost. The classical inventory models, e.g., newsvendor and EOQ models, assume either a single or infinite planning periods. However, these models may not be applied to perishable products which usually have a certain shelf life....
متن کاملNewsvendor models with dependent random supply and demand
The newsvendor model is perhaps the most widely analyzed model in inventory management. In this singleperiod model, the only source of randomness is the demand during the period and one tries to determine the optimal order quantity in view of various cost factors. We consider an extention where supply is also random so that the quantity ordered is not necessarily received in full at the beginni...
متن کاملDETERMINATION OF OPTIMAL HEDGING RULE USING FUZZY SET THEORY FOR MULTI-RESERVOIR OPERATION
To deal with severe drought when water supply is insufficient hedging rule, based on hedging rule curve, is proposed. In general, in discrete hedging rules, the rationing factors have changed from a zone to another zone at once. Accordingly, this paper is an attempt to improve the conventional hedging rule to control the changes of rationing factors. In this regard, the simulation model has emp...
