چکیده

Using our interferometric angular diameter measurements of seven classical Cepheids reported in Kervella et al. (2003, Paper I), complemented by previously existing measurements, we derive new calibrations of the Cepheids Period–Radius (P–R) and Period–Luminosity (P–L) relations. We obtain a P–R relation of logR = [0.767 ± 0.009] logP + [1.091 ± 0.011], only 1σ away from the relation obtained by Gieren et al. (1998). We therefore confirm their P–R relation at a level of ∆(logR) = ±0.02. We also derive an original calibration of the P–L relation, assuming the slopes derived by Gieren et al. (1998) from LMC Cepheids, αK = −3.267± 0.042 and αV = −2.769 ± 0.073. With a P–L relation of the form Mλ = αλ (logP − 1) + βλ, we obtain logP = 1 reference points of βK = −5.904 ± 0.063 and βV = −4.209 ± 0.075. Our calibration in the V band is statistically identical to the geometrical result of Lanoix et al. (1999).

Cepheid distances from Interferometry

Long baseline interferometry is now able to resolve the pulsational change of the angular diameter of a significant number of Cepheids in the solar neighborhood. This allows the application of a new version of the Baade-Wesselink (BW) method to measure their distance, for which we do not need to estimate the star’s temperature. Using angular diameter measurements from the VLT Interferometer, we...

Multiplicity of Galactic Cepheids from long-baseline interferometry

Context. More than 60% of Cepheids are in binary or multiple systems. Studying such systems could lead to a better understanding of the age and evolution of Cepheids. These are also useful tools to estimate the mass of Cepheids, and constrain theoretical models of their pulsation and evolution. Aims. We aim at determining the masses of Cepheids in binary systems, as well as their geometric dist...

Cepheid observations by long-baseline interferometry with FLUOR/IOTA

We report interferometric observations of the classical galactic Cepheid ζ Gem with FLUOR (Fiber Linked Unit for Optical Recombination), installed at the IOTA (Infrared Optical Telescope Array) interferometer. Thanks to the high precision of the visibility measurements with FLUOR, it has been possible to estimate its mean uniform disk angular diameter to a relative precision of 5 % (θud = 1.98 ...

The angular size of the Cepheid l Car: a comparison of the interferometric and surface brightness techniques

Recent interferometric observations of the brightest and angularly largest classical Cepheid, l Carinae, with ESO’s VLT Interferometer (VLTI) have resolved with high precision the variation of its angular diameter with phase. We compare the measured angular diameter curve to the one we derive by an application of the Baade-Wesselink type infrared surface brightness technique, and find a near-pe...
