X-ray Lines From Gamma-ray Bursts

چکیده
X-ray lines have been recently detected in the afterglows of a few gamma-ray bursts. We derive constraints on the physical conditions in the line-emitting gas, using as an example the multiple Kα lines detected by Reeves et al. (2002) in GRB 011211. We argue that models previously discussed in the literature require either a very extreme geometry or too much mass in the line-emitting region. We propose a new model in which gamma-rays and radiation from the early x-ray afterglow are back-scattered by an electron-positron pair screen at a distance of about 1014− 10 cm from the source and irradiate the expanding outer layers of the supernova ejecta, thereby producing x-ray lines. The model suffers from fewer problems compared to previous models. It also has the advantage of requiring only a single explosion to produce both the GRB and the supernova ejecta, in contrast to most other models for the lines which require the supernova to go off days or weeks prior to the GRB. The model, however, has difficulty explaining the > 10 ergs of energy emitted in the x-ray lines, which requires somewhat extreme choices of model parameters. The difficulties associated with the various models are not particular to GRB 011211. They are likely to pose a problem for any GRB with x-ray lines. Soft X-ray Emission Lines in the Early Afterglow of Gamma-ray Bursts
We compute the luminosity of Kα emission lines produced by astrophysically abundant elements in the soft X-ray spectra of the early afterglow of gamma-ray bursts. We find that the detection of these lines can be a diagnostic for the geometrical set-up of the reprocessing material. In particular we can distinguish between a “geometry dominated” model, in which the line emission is coming from an...
متن کاملX-ray Lines in Gamma-ray Bursts and Cerenkov Line Mechanism
X-ray emission and absorption features are of great importance in our understanding the nature and environment of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). So far, iron emission lines have been detected in at least four GRB afterglows. In this paper, the observational properties and physical constraints on materials surrounding GRB sources are reviewed, and several classes of theoretical models are also discuss...
متن کاملThe Cannonball Model of Gamma Ray Bursts: Lines in the X-Ray Afterglow
Recent observations suggest that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are produced by jets of highly relativistic cannonballs (CBs), emitted in supernova explosions. The fully ionized CBs cool to a temperature below 4500 K within a day or two, at which point electron–proton recombination produces an intense Lyman-α emission. The line energy is Doppler-shifted by the CBs’ motion to X-ray...
متن کاملCerenkov Line Emission as a Possible Mechanism of X-ray Lines in Gamma-ray Bursts
The recent discoveries of X-ray lines in the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide significant clues to the nature of GRB progenitors and central environments. However, the iron line interpretation by fluorescence or recombination mechanism involves the request for the large amount of iron material. We argue that the very strong iron line could be attributed to an alternative mechanism:...
متن کاملDelayed Nickel Decay in Gamma-ray Bursts
Recently observed emission lines in the X-ray afterglow of -ray bursts suggest that iron-group elements are either produced in the -ray burst or are present nearby. If this material is the product of a thermonuclear burn, then such material would be expected to be rich in nickel-56. If the nickel remains partially ionized, this prevents the electron capture reaction normally associated with the...
