Virtual environments for shipboard firefighting training
نویسندگان
چکیده
A virtual environment (VE) of portions of the ex-USS Shadwell, the Navy's full-scale fire research and test ship, has been developed to study the feasibility of using immersive VE as a tool for shipboard firefighting training and mission rehearsal. The VE system uses a headmounted display and 3D joystick to allow users to navigate through and interact with the environment. Fire and smoke effects are added to simulate actual firefighting conditions. This paper describes the feasibility tests that were performed aboard the Shadwell and presents promising results of the benefits of VE training over conventional training methods.

VR Systems: Out from the Laboratory
In spite of the large amount of "hype" that accompanied virtual reality (VR) earlier this decade, the field has produced only a few examples of demonstrably useful systems. Systems must be fielded and validated to show that VR is useful for purposes other than academic research. This paper discusses two VR systems developed at the Naval Research Laboratory that have received validation by stati...

V irtual reality efforts in the Information Technology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) span mission planning, rehearsal, and execution; simulation-based design; and medicine. We devote much of our work to ship-based applications, presenting two such efforts in this article. One project focuses on experiments in shipboard firefighting to verify the effectiveness ofVR as a mission...

The growing interest in using Serious Games in education has also reached the field of fire brigade training. By the use of simulations, firefighters can train in virtual worlds on the computer and learn about processes and prepare real fire drills. It is for example possible to extinguish a virtual fire or to set up a water supply in such simulations. Played on a common computer and with input...
