M e t h o d s Data sources: Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (Issue 4, 2001), MEDLINE (1980 to June 2002), EMBASE/Excerpta Medica (1980 to May 2002), bibliographies of relevant studies, and contacting experts. Study selection and assessment: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in any language of patients > 16 years of age having pleurodesis for pleural effusion in the context of metastatic cancer or a malignant process leading to pleural effusion that compared any sclerosant with other sclerosants, or thoracoscopic pleurodesis with bedside pleurodesis. 2 reviewers independently assessed studies for quality. Outcomes: Effectiveness of pleurodesis (nonrecurrence of effusion) and adverse events.

Talc pleurodesis for the management of malignant pleural effusions in Japan.
OBJECTIVE Malignant pleural effusions are commonly treated with tube drainage followed by chemical pleurodesis to maintain the patient's quality of life. While talc is now accepted to be a worldwide gold-standard sclerosing agent for treating malignant pleural effusion, it is not yet approved in Japan. Instead, many patients are administered OK-432 for pleurodesis, which carries the risk of com...
متن کاملProspective randomized comparison of thoracoscopic talc poudrage under local anesthesia versus bleomycin instillation for pleurodesis in malignant pleural effusions.
Induction of pleurodesis offers benefit for patients with metastatic tumors and symptomatic malignant pleural effusions, but the best method for achieving this is still unknown. In this prospective, randomized comparison of two well-established pleurodesis procedures, 36 patients with malignant pleural effusions, expanded lungs after drainage, and expected survival of > 1 mo received either ble...
متن کاملThoracoscopic talc poudrage in malignant pleural effusions: effective pleurodesis despite low pleural pH.
STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the effectiveness of pleurodesis by thoracoscopic talc poudrage (TTP) in patients with low pH malignant pleural effusions. DESIGN Review of prospectively collected data on all thoracoscopic procedures performed from 1982 to 1996. PATIENTS AND SETTING Twenty-five members in a prepaid, closed-panel health maintenance organization, whose malignant pleural effusion ...
متن کاملTalc mediates angiostasis in malignant pleural effusions via endostatin induction.
Talc remains the most effective sclerosing agent for pleurodesis. However, its mechanism of action in resolving pleural malignant disease remains unclear. The present study evaluated the angiogenic balance in the pleural space in patients with malignant pleural effusions (MPE) following talc insufflation. Patient pleural fluid samples were collected both before and after talc insufflation. The ...

INTRODUCTION This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of medical thoracoscopy (MT) and thoracoscopic talc poudrage (TTP) in patients with exudative pleural effusion. METHODS We evaluated the diagnostic yields, complications and outcomes of MT and TTP in 41 consecutive patients with symptomatic pleural effusions who were planned to undergo both procedures from 1 December 2011 to 30 Novembe...
