چکیده

α−Lipoic acid is unique in its ability to act as an antioxidant in fatand watersoluble tissues in both its oxidized and reduced forms. It is readily absorbed from an oral dose. Because of its myriad biological activities, including an ability to chelate metals and to scavenge a wide array of free radicals, α−lipoic acid is considered by several experts to be an ideal antioxidant. Clinical applications for this nutrient include the following conditions: diabetic polyneuropathy, cataracts, glaucoma, ischemia− reperfusion injury, and Amanita mushroom poisoning. Because of its unique characteristics α−lipoic acid is likely to have therapeutic application in a wide range of additional clinical conditions. (Alt Med Rev 1997; 2(3):177-183)

Effect of α-lipoic Acid on Hemolytic Activity of Iranian Vipera Lebetina Venom

Abstract Background and Objective: Snake venom is a complex of several toxic elements and enzymes. It has the agents with the ability to destroy cellular and subcellular membrane and to bring about hemolysis of red blood cells (RBC). Two types of direct and indirect hemolytic activity are known in snake venom in that phospholipase A2 is responsible for the indirect lysis. The aim of this st...

Voltammetric Determination of α-Lipoic Acid using Poly(Vanillin) Modified Platinum Electrode

In the present study electrochemical detection of α-lipoic acid (α-LA) was carried out with a poly(Vanillin) modified platinum electrode p(VA)/PtE in Brinton Robinson buffer (BR) solution. The platinum electrode surface’s was modified with cyclic voltammetry method. The prepared Pt electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry in ferrocyanide and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. T...

α-Lipoic Acid Mitigates Arsenic-Induced Hematological Abnormalities in Adult Male Rats

Background: Arsenic toxicity is a major global health problem and exposure via contaminated drinking water has been associated with hematological and other systemic disorders. The present investigation has been conducted in adult male rats to evaluate the protective ability of α-lipoic acid (ALA) against such hematological disorders. Methods: Twenty-four adult male Wister rats (b.wt.130±10g) wer...

Coenzyme Q10 and α-lipoic acid: antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects in plasma and peripheral blood lymphocytes of supplemented subjects

Reactive oxygen species not only cause damage but also have a physiological role in the protection against pathogens and in cell signalling. Mitochondrial nutrients, such as coenzyme Q10 and α-lipoic acid, beside their acknowledged antioxidant activities, show interesting features in relation to their redox state and consequent biological activity. In this study, we tested whether oral suppleme...

The Effect of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Learning and Memory Deficit in a Rat Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Introduction: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which patients experience spontaneous recurrent seizures and deficiency in learning and memory. Although the most commonly recommended therapy is drug treatment, some patients do not achieve adequate control of their seizures on existing drugs. New medications with novel mechanisms of action are needed to help those patients whose sei...
