Quantifying orbital migration from exoplanet statistics and host metallicities

چکیده

We investigate how the statistical distribution of extrasolar planets may be combined with knowledge of the host stars’ metallicity to yield constraints on the migration histories of gas giant planets. At any radius, planets that barely manage to form around the lowest metallicity stars accrete their envelopes just as the gas disk is being dissipated, so the lower envelope of planets in a plot of metallicity vs semi-major axis defines a sample of non-migratory planets that will have suffered less than average migration subsequent to gap opening. Under the assumption that metallicity largely controls the initial surface density of planetesimals, we use simplified core accretion models to calculate how the minimum metallicity needed for planet formation varies as a function of semi-major axis. Models that do not include core migration prior to gap opening (Type I migration) predict that the critical metallicity is largely flat between the snow line and a ≈ 6 AU, with a weak dependence on the initial surface density profile of planetesimals. When slow Type I migration is included, the critical metallicity is found to increase steadily from 1-10 AU. Large planet samples, that include planets at modestly greater orbital radii than present surveys, therefore have the potential to quantify the extent of migration in both Type I and Type II regimes. The Exoplanet Orbit Database

We present a database of well determined orbital parameters of exoplanets, and their host stars’ properties. This database comprises spectroscopic orbital elements measured for 427 planets orbiting 363 stars from radial velocity and transit measurements as reported in the literature. We have also compiled fundamental transit parameters, stellar parameters, and the method used for the planets di...

Lithium abundances in exoplanet-host stars : modelling

Aims. Exoplanet-host stars (EHS) are known to present superficial chemical abundances different from those of stars without any detected planet (NEHS). EHS are, on the average, overmetallic compared to the Sun. The observations also show that, for cool stars, lithium is more depleted in EHS than in NEHS. The aim of this paper is to obtain constraints on possible models able to explain this diff...

The barycentric motion of exoplanet host stars Tests of solar spin–orbit coupling

Context. Empirical evidence suggests a tantalising but unproven link between various indicators of solar activity and the barycentric motion of the Sun. The latter is exemplified by transitions between regular and more disordered motion modulated by the motions of the giant planets, and rare periods of retrograde motion with negative orbital angular momentum. An examination of the barycentric m...

MARVELS: Revealing the Formation and Dynamical Evolution of Giant Planet Systems

MARVELS, the Multi-Object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey, is a 6year program to characterize the distribution of gas giant planets with orbital periods ranging from several hours to two years. MARVELS will use multi-fiber interferometric spectrographs on the wide-field, 2.5-meter Sloan Foundation telescope at Apache Point Observatory to monitor ∼ 11, 000 stars in the magnitude ...

ELODIE metallicity - biased search for transiting Hot Jupiters ⋆ II . A very hot Jupiter transiting the bright K star HD 189733

Among the 160 known exoplanets, mainly detected in large radial-velocity surveys, only 8 have a characterization of their actual mass and radius thanks to the two complementary methods of detection: radial velocities and photometric transit. We started in March 2004 an exoplanet-search programme biased toward high-metallicity stars which are more frequently host extra-solar planets. This survey...
