to performing CLS, so they feel no need to conduct HALS. However, the similar clinical outcomes for CLS and HALS do not mean that HALS is an unnecessary procedure; rather, it means that surgeons can choose the procedure they like. Thus, although I agree with the authors’ conclusion in this present study, if the true value of a HALS right colectomy is to be determined, a comparative, prospective study should be conducted on the two groups under equal conditions.

Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery versus laparoscopic right colectomy: a meta-analysis
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to systematically assess the clinical efficacy of hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) and laparoscopic right colectomy (LRC). METHODS The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs were collected by searching electronic databases (Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library). The outcomes included intraoperative outcomes, postoperative outcome...
متن کاملThe Surgical Technique of Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Sigmoid Colectomy
Although the first reported laparoscopic assisted colectomy was in 1991 [1], the number of laparoscopic colonic procedures remained a minority of colonic resections. This was attributed to the fact that laparoscopic colectomy is technically challenging and demands a long learning curve. Therefore, hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) was advocated as a useful alternative to laparoscopic co...

PURPOSE To determine the most efficient technique for performing a colectomy, we used the methodology of time-motion analysis. METHODS The efficiency of five hand-assisted and six regular laparoscopic colectomies and one open colectomy, performed by four surgeons in three different hospitals, was measured. The open colectomy was analyzed as a reference procedure. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The...
متن کاملRobotic-Assisted Versus Laparoscopic Colectomy: Cost and Clinical Outcomes
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Laparoscopic colectomies, with and without robotic assistance, are performed to treat both benign and malignant colonic disease. This study compared clinical and economic outcomes for laparoscopic colectomy procedures with and without robotic assistance. METHODS Patients aged ≥18 years having primary inpatient laparoscopic colectomy procedures (cecectomy, right hemic...
متن کاملLaparoscopic surgery for colon and rectal cancer.
Laparoscopic techniques are now being applied to increasing numbers of general surgical procedures. Technical feasibility, margins, number of lymph nodes, and recurrence rates need to be assessed with the application of this new technique to colon or rectal malignancies. Technically, the right colon, sigmoid, and proximal rectum appear to be the most amenable to laparoscopic assisted or complet...
