Pulmonary amoebiasis--a revisit.

چکیده
We recently diagnosed a very rare case of ulcerative pleurisy secondary to amoebiasis. The patient, a 49 year old male was admitted to Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital complaining of shortness of breaths of a week’s duration. Clinical examinations showed features of consolidation of the right lower base and pneumonia was clinically suspected. Chest xray (Fig. 1a) showed pleural effusion and on insertion of chest tube, 250 ml of pus mixed with blood was drained. Pleural biopsy was done to exclude malignancy. The histopathological examinations (Fig. 1b) showed presence of a few amoebic parasites among the necrotic exudate of an ulcerative pleura associated with inflamed granulation tissue. The patient did not have hepatomegaly clinically and was confirmed by ultrasound. He is a known case of chronic renal failure and on regular hemodialysis. He is also a known diabetic for some years. Pleurisy secondary to amebiasis is extremely rare, rarer still when present without liver involvement. In 1962, Chest journal had a case report and a short Letter to Editor communication on this disease in 1992. Unlike those cases, ours had no obvious liver source of amoebiasis and did not have right upper abdominal tenderness. He was given intravenous metornidazole and has since fully recovered. His underlying chronic immune deficient status (diabetes and chronic renal failure) are possible contributing factors to this rare presentation of a relatively common disease in the tropics. We would like to revisit this case in this short communication.

Primary pulmonary amoebiasis--an unusual cause of pulmonary consolidation.
While colonic and hepatic amoebiasis occur commonly in tropical countries, primary pulmonary amoebiasis remains a rare condition. Pulmonary involvement, when it occurs, is usually secondary to amoebic liver abscess. Primary pulmonary amoebiasis is thought to occur via haematogenous spread. We report a case of primary pulmonary amoebiasis confirmed by visualizing the trophozoites of entamoeba hi...

BACKGROUND Among parasitic diseases, amoebiasis is the third most frequent cause of mortality after malaria and schistosomiasis. Pulmonary amoebiasis, the second most common extraintestinal manifestation of infection, occurs in 2%-3% of patients with invasive amoebiasis. The present clinical report aims to present a single case of a rare diagnosed parasitic disease in Romania and to emphasize t...

Pulmonary amoebiasis without liver involvement occurs sporadically as a result of haematogenous spread from a primary site, the colon. The case history is presented of a patient who developed superior vena cava syndrome due to a pulmonary amoebic abscess without liver involvement. He was initially suspected of having a neoplasm but a combination of tests including histological examination of th...

From a retrospective scrutiny of 500 consecutive case records, which related to patients with empyema thoracis, over a 13-year period in a relatively closed community of one and a half million in the south-east region of Scotland (le Roux, 1965), it emerged that, in 50% of patients, empyema was related to non-specific pulmonary infection for which a persisting cause was not found, and that this...
متن کاملPleuropulmonary Amoebiasis: Know to Think About
Amoebiasis is the third leading cause of death due to a parasitic infection in the world after malaria and schistosomiasis [1]. The pleuropulmonary localization is the second most common extra-intestinal expression after liver damage [1]. The direct pulmonary Entamoeba histolytica infestation is less common than secondary form called “neighborhood” reaction [2]. The authors propose to report a ...
