Making lemonade? Defensive coping style moderates the effect of stereotype threat on women’s math test performance

چکیده
People high in defensive pessimism—a coping style characterized by ruminating on worse case scenarios when under stress—perform better under high than low academic pressure. The goal of the present study was to explore whether defensive pessimists might also perform better under high rather than low stereotype threat. Results supported hypotheses: specifically, some individuals’ (e.g., defensive pessimists) performance was higher under high than low stereotype threat. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Stereotype threat spillover: how coping with threats to social identity affects aggression, eating, decision making, and attention.
Stereotype threat spillover is a situational predicament in which coping with the stress of stereotype confirmation leaves one in a depleted volitional state and thus less likely to engage in effortful self-control in a variety of domains. We examined this phenomenon in 4 studies in which we had participants cope with stereotype and social identity threat and then measured their performance in ...
متن کاملStereotype Threat and Women’s Math Performance
When women perform math, unlike men, they risk being judged by the negative stereotype that women have weaker math ability. We call this predicament stereotype threat and hypothesize that the apprehension it causes may disrupt women’s math performance. In Study 1 we demonstrated that the pattern observed in the literature that women underperform on difficult (but not easy) math tests was observ...

This experiment examined the eVects of implicit gender-math stereotyping and implicit gender and math identiWcation on women’s math performance under stereotype threat and reduced threat conditions. Results showed that of the three, only implicit gender-math stereotyping moderated stereotype threat eVects on women’s math performance: women who showed less implicit math-gender stereotyping showe...
متن کاملA Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Investigation of the Neural Mechanisms Underlying Women’s Underperformance in Math
This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural structures associated with women’s underperformance on math tasks. Although women in a control condition recruited neural networks that are associated with mathematical learning (i.e., angular gyrus, left parietal and prefrontal cortex), women who were reminded of gender stereotypes about math ability did not recruit t...
متن کاملTeaching Stereotype Threat as a Means of Improving Women’s Math Performance
We tested whether informing women about stereotype threat is a useful intervention to improve their performance in a threatening testing situation. Men and women completed difficult math problems described either as a problem-solving task or as a math test. In a third (teaching-intervention) condition, the test was also described as a math test, but participants were additionally informed that ...
