Sensitivity of spatial integration to perceptual cues is preserved in healthy aging
نویسنده
چکیده
Spatial integration has been shown to substantially decline with age. We examined the mechanism underlying this age-related impairment. Young and older adults were tested on the ability to integrate contour elements across variations in the collinearity of the target elements, their spatial proximity, and the relative spacing of the target elements to the background noise elements (Δ). The results show that although contour integration generally declines with age, tolerating less noise (higher Δ) than in young adulthood, its mechanism is preserved over the years, critically depending on the relations between collinearity and spatial proximity of the contour elements. The results suggest that while spatial integration in childhood is limited by the absolute contour spacing, lacking the ability to use collinearity in order to overcome poor proximity among the elements, no changes occur in the sensitivity of contour integration to these perceptual cues at the other end of the lifespan. This suggests that the sensitivity of spatial integration to the statistics of natural scenes is preserved in aging.

Anticipation in Baseball: Differences in Using Spatial Cues between Skilled and Novice Players
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the differences between novice and skilled baseball players to anticipate the type of ball being pitched and to specify the players’ dependence on distributed or local kinematic spatial cues. Male baseball players (N= 15; Mage: 27.73 ± 6.28 years; baseball experience: 7.90 ± 5.69 years) and novices (N= 15; Mage: 23.10 ± 5.68 years; no playing exp...
متن کاملTemporal Orienting of Attention Can Be Preserved in Normal Aging
Being able to orient our attention to moments in time is crucial for optimizing behavioral performance. In young adults, flexible cue-based temporal expectations have been shown to modulate perceptual functions and enhance behavioral performance. Recent studies with older individuals have reported significant deficits in cued temporal orienting. To investigate the extent of these deficits, the ...

This study examined whether motivational incentives modulate age-related perceptual deficits. Younger and older adults performed a perceptual discrimination task in which bicolored stimuli had to be classified according to their dominating color. The valent color was associated with either a positive or negative payoff, whereas the neutral color was not associated with a payoff. Effects of ince...
متن کاملChanges in perceptual sensitivity related to spatial cues depends on subcortical activity.
Spatial cues allow animals to selectively attend to relevant visual stimuli while ignoring distracters. This process depends on a distributed neuronal network, and an important current challenge is to understand the functional contributions made by individual brain regions within this network and how these contributions interact. Recent findings point to a possible anatomical segregation, with ...

Background & Aims: Direct electrical stimulation of the brain is a therapeutic technique that can be effective in improving visual, verbal, and spatial perception. The present study investigated the effect of direct electrical stimulation (tDCS) of the posterior parietal cortex on improving spatial, visual, and verbal perceptual abilities. Materials & Methods: In this quasi-experimental study,...
