Abramovitz,-Mimi Blaming Women for Unemployment: Refuting a Myth. School Social Work Hunter Coll, New York NY 10021 Social-Casework; 1984, 65, 9, Nov, 547-553. Document delivery from University Microfilms International . The myth that women are responsible for an increase in unemployment is refuted. Examination of several national economic indicators & demographic data reveals that in 1980: (1) women's earnings accounted for 33.6%-52.7% of family income; (2) 40% of minority families were maintained by women; (3) 33% of F-headed families lived below the poverty line; & (4) F unemployment rates exceeded M rates. Working women pursue employment to meet economic needs of their families; rather than agents of unemployment, they are its primary victims. The persistence of the myth is suggested to be based on political concerns; "blaming the victim" helps to obscure the fundamental causes of unemployment. R.
