Improved illumination in indirect ophthalmoscopy.

چکیده

THE indirect method of ophthalmoscopy offers several advantages over the direct method; these include larger field of view, better penetration of hazy media, greater depth of focus, and closer approach to the ora serrata (Schepens and Bahn, 1950). These features are of especial importance in cases of detachment of the retina, where the necessity of studying the topography and locating all the tears was pointed out by Gonin (1934), and has since been stressed by several authors, including Weve (1934), Arruga (1946a), Schepens (1951), and McDonald (1951). Unfortunately, many ophthalmologists consider the indirect method difficult and unsatisfactory, objecting that the illumination is feeble and/or that the field is not much larger than obtained by the, direct method. The problem may be studied qualitatively by means of simple ray diagrams.

Simplified Indirect Ophthalmoscope.

INDIRECT ophthalmoscopy is one of the most important methods of fundus examination, especially in cases of detachment of the retina. The advantages of this method over direct ophthalmoscopy include a larger field of view, a more brilliant image, and a greater depth of focus. It is especially valuable for the examination of the highly myopic eye. The stereoscopic view obtained with the binocular...

Teaching retinal surgery.

It was in 1953 that Sir Stewart asked me to undertake some work in the field of retinal detachments at the Institute of Ophthalmology. The scene of retinal work at that time was one of small islands of individual professional excellence in an ocean of professional ignorance and much apathy about the subject. The giants at that time, Weve of Utrecht, Shapland of London, Pischel of San Francisco,...

A new indirect ophthalmoscope prototype.

We have constructed a new indirect ophthalmoscope. This instrument has a T-shaped housing composed of an illuminating tube and a viewing tube. A fiberoptic light source provides illumination. The inverted aerial image of the fundus coincides with the plane of the viewing window of the housing. This unit can be easily connected to a television camera for television ophthalmoscopy or to an image ...

Scleral Buckling with Chandelier Illumination

Scleral buckling is a highly successful technique for the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment that requires intra-operative examination of the retina and treatment of retinal breaks via indirect ophthalmoscopy. Data suggest that scleral buckling likely results in improved outcomes for many patients but is declining in popularity, perhaps because of significant advances in vitrectomy ins...

An inexpensive method of indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Attention is drawn to the possibility of performing monocular indirect ophthalmoscopy with a pen torch and a condensing lens when facilities for binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy are not available.
