چکیده

We show how an electromagnetic cavity with arbitrarily high Q and small (bounded) modal volume can be formed in two or three dimensions with a proper choice of dielectric constants. Unlike in previous work, neither a complete photonic bandgap nor a trade-off in mode localization for Q is required. Rather, scattering and radiation are prohibited by a perfect mode match of the TE-polarized modes in each subsection of a Bragg resonator. Q values in excess of 10(5) are demonstrated through finite-difference time-domain simulations of two- and three-dimensional structures with modal areas or volumes of the order of the wavelength squared or cubed.

Discrete-mode cancellation mechanism for high-Q integrated optical cavities with small modal volume.

A mechanism to reduce radiation loss from integrated optical cavities without a complete photonic bandgap is introduced and demonstrated. It is applicable to any device with a patterned substrate (including both low and high index-contrast systems), when it supports discrete guided or leaky modes through which power escaping the cavity can be channeled into radiation. One then achieves the asso...

High-Q hybrid 3D-2D slab-3D photonic crystal microcavity.

The radiation loss in the escaping light cone with a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal slab microcavity can be suppressed by means of cladding the low-Q slab microcavity by three-dimensional woodpile photonic crystals with the complete bandgap when the resonance frequency is located inside the complete bandgap. It is confirmed that the hybrid microcavity based on a low-Q, single-defect phot...

Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Micro-cavities for Chip-scale Laser Applications

1.1 Photonic crystals In this chapter we will focus on two-dimensional photonic crystal devices and emphasize their use as building blocks in photonic integrated circuits with applications in high bandwidth optical communication systems. In particular we will discuss recent progress in designing high quality (Q) factor resonant cavities for building efficient microand nanocavity lasers. The fir...

A Modified Hybrid MoM-Modal Method for Shielding Effectiveness Evaluation of Rectangular Enclosures with Multiple Apertures

A new hybrid modal-moment method is proposed to calculate fields penetrated through small apertures on rectangular metallic enclosures. First, the method of moments is used to numerically solve the governing electric field integral equation for the equivalent two-dimensional surface-current distributions on the surface of metallic enclosure including any number of rectangular apertures of arbit...

Strain-tunable Photonic Band Gap Microcavity Waveguides at 1.55 μm Personnel

Concept and Key Idea Photonic-bandgap microcavities in optical waveguides have demonstrated cavity resonances at wavelengths near 1.55 μm band, quality factors on the order of 300, and modal volume at 0.055 μm3 in high-index contrast Si/SiO2 waveguides and GaAs air-bridge waveguides. Applications include zero-threshold microlasers, filters and signal routers. For tunability in Si microphotonic ...
