Interactions Among Chemical Speciation, Algal Accumulation, and Biogeochemical Cycling of Toxic Metals in a Major US Naval Harbor (Elizabeth River, VA)

چکیده
In conjunction with John Donat and David Burdige at Old Dominion University, we are studying the influence of metal speciation and metal/metal interactions on the particulate cycling and removal of pollutant metals (Zn and Cd) in the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Estuaries, home of the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet. We are especially interested in the role of metal uptake by plankton as well as in our ability of to predict removal of metals from algal uptake models. These models will be based on field data for free ion concentrations of controlling metals (Zn, Cd, Cu, and Mn) and laboratory data on algal uptake as functions of free ionic concentrations of these metals.

Interactions Among Ligand Production, Chemical Complexation and Speciation, Algal Accumulation, And Sediment-Water Cycling Of Toxic Metals In A Major US Naval Harbor (Elizabeth River, VA)
In conjunction with other ONR HP investigators, we are performing an integrated study of the biogeochemical cycling of Cu, Cd, Zn, and Mn in the water column and sediments of a major US Naval harbor, the Elizabeth River (VA). We are studying the interrelationships among: (1) trace metal concentrations, complexation and speciation (Donat); (2) in situ production of Cu chelators by natural microb...
متن کاملEvaluation of background geochemical speciation of heavy metals in overburden topsoil of bituminous sand deposit area, Ondo state, Nigeria
Metals are ubiquitous within the earth crust. However, the exceptional high-level concentration of heavy metals in the soil due to natural or anthropogenic activities and the chemical forms in which they exist determine the level of risk they portend to the environment. This work was aimed at determining the background level of the presence of seven priority toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, Cu...
متن کاملInvestigation of heavy metals accumulation in the sediment and body of carp fish in Aras River
Heavy metals are considered as the most dangerous water contaminants because of their possibility of bioaccumulation and toxic effects. This study tried to investigate the bio-availability of heavy metals in terms of Ni, Zn, Cu, Fe, Hg, Cd, and Pb in the sediment during dry seasons in Aras River basin located in Ardabil Province, north-west of Iran. Also the metal concentration in the skin and ...

متن کاملImplications of Microbial Heavy Metal Tolerance in the Environment
This paper focuses on the general ways in which microbes interact with metals. Some bacteria have evolved mechanisms to detoxify heavy metals, and some even use them for respiration. Microbial interactions with metals may have several implications for the environment. Microbes may play a large role in the biogeochemical cycling of toxic heavy metals also in cleaning up or remediating metal-cont...
