Sequences of Mechanisms for Causal Reasoning in Artificial Intelligence

چکیده
We present a new approach to token-level causal reasoning that we call Sequences Of Mechanisms (SoMs), which models causality as a dynamic sequence of active mechanisms that chain together to propagate causal influence through time. We motivate this approach by using examples from AI and robotics and show why existing approaches are inadequate. We present an algorithm for causal reasoning based on SoMs, which takes as input a knowledge base of first-order mechanisms and a set of observations, and it hypothesizes which mechanisms are active at what time. We show empirically that our algorithm produces plausible causal explanations of simulated observations generated from a causal model. We argue that the SoMs approach is qualitatively closer to the human causal reasoning process, for example, it will only include relevant variables in explanations. We present new insights about causal reasoning that become apparent with this view. One such insight is that observation and manipulation do not commute in causal models, a fact which we show to be a generalization of the EquilibrationManipulation Commutability of [Dash(2005)].

Motivated Action Theory: a Formal Theory of Causal Reasoning
When we reason about change over time, causation provides an implicit preference: we prefer sequences of situations in which one situation leads causally to the next, rather than sequences in which one situation follows another at random and without causal connections. In this paper, we explore the problem of temporal reasoning—reasoning about change over time—and the crucial role that causatio...

متن کاملFormal Rules for Fuzzy Causal Analyses and Fuzzy Inferences
Causal inference is one of the central capabilities of the natural intelligence that plays a crucial role in thinking, perception, and problem solving. Fuzzy inferences are an extended form of formal inferences that provide a denotational mathematical means for rigorously dealing with degrees of matters, uncertainties, and vague semantics of linguistic variables, as well as for rational reasoni...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Reasoning and Causation
It is suggested that taking into account considerations that traditionally fall within the scope of computer science in general. and artificial intelligence in particular, sheds new light on the subject of causation. It is orgued that adopting causal nations can be viewed as filling a computational need: They allow reasoning with incomplete information, facilitate economical representations, an...
متن کاملEffects of Fact Mutability in the Interpretation of Counterfactuals
This paper explores the relationship between fact mutability, intervention and human evaluation of counterfactual conditionals. Two experiments are reported that show the effects of causal strength and causal distance on fact mutability and intervention. Subjects’ answers are compared to the predictions of three models of counterfactual reasoning in Artificial Intelligence. This comparison demo...
