Soft X-ray Emission Lines in the Early Afterglow of Gamma-ray Bursts

چکیده
We compute the luminosity of Kα emission lines produced by astrophysically abundant elements in the soft X-ray spectra of the early afterglow of gamma-ray bursts. We find that the detection of these lines can be a diagnostic for the geometrical set-up of the reprocessing material. In particular we can distinguish between a “geometry dominated” model, in which the line emission is coming from an extended region and its duration arises from light-travel-time effects and an “engine dominated” model, where the line emitting gas is in a smaller region, irradiated for a longer period. These lines therefore offer clues to the dynamics and time-scale of the explosion leading to a gamma-ray burst. Letter to the Editor Observations of the soft gamma-ray early afterglow emission from two bright gamma-ray bursts
We present the results of observations of the soft gamma-ray early afterglows with the energy above 100 keV from two bright Gamma-ray bursts detected by the PHEBUS instrument of the GRANAT orbital observatory. We show that the light curves of GRB 910402 and GRB 920723 events present the afterglow emission with fading fluxes. During our observations (∼ 700 s) for these gamma-ray bursts the after...

متن کاملAfterglow Emission from Naked Gamma-ray Bursts
We calculate the afterglow emission for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) going off in an extremely low density medium, referred to as naked bursts. Our results also apply to the case where the external medium density falls off sharply at some distance from the burst. The observed afterglow flux in this case originates at high latitudes, i.e. where the angle between the fluid velocity and the observer li...
متن کاملPhysical Processes Shaping Gamma-ray Burst X-ray Afterglow Light Curves: Theoretical Implications from the Swift X-ray Telescope Observations
With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, a rich trove of early X-ray afterglow data has been collected by its onboard X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Some interesting features are emerging, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more ‘‘normal’’ decay component observed i...
متن کاملCorrelations of Prompt and Afterglow Emission in Swift Long and Short Gamma Ray Bursts
Correlation studies of prompt and afterglow emissions from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) between different spectral bands has been difficult to do in the past because few bursts had comprehensive and intercomparable afterglow measurements. In this paper1 we present a large and uniform data set for correlation analysis based on bursts detected by the Swift mission. For the first time, short and long b...
