چکیده

introduction: serratia marcescens is a serious death-causing factor especially for premature and low birth weighted neonates, and has become an important cause of nosocomial infection over the last years. it is a motile, non-sporulating gram-negative bacillus classified in the family enterobacteriacea. this group of bacteria affect on immune system mainly in newborns.  in this report, we describe the course of the outbreak we had experienced and the measures taken to control it. materials & methods: all of the medical records and other associated variables of patients suffered from serratia marcescens infection were studied. .  also certain procedures including cell cultures of medical equipments, water supply, sanitation of medical personels and patients, were done to find sources of the outbreak in neonatal ward (kermanshah – iran).  results: 565 hospitalized patients from september 2000 till march 2001 was studied.33 patients showed positive infection results with serration marcescens and confirmed using blood culture (68.8%), in cerebro-spinal fluid culture (23.2%) and both methods (6.8). 13 out of 33 (39.4%) patients have died. finally it was found that the source of infection could derive from hospital water supply since after taking preventive steps such as controlling consumed water no cases were found with serration marcescens. conclusion: this study showed that outbreak of serratia marcescens would lead to serious in the newborn infants.  marcessence infection in newborn wards is difficult to manage and may temporarily need closure of units to new admissions and care should be exercised to control the spread. awareness of the danger for the presence of this organism in a newborn unit and controlling its spread will be necessary to prevent life threatening infection in the high risk newborn in the future

Serratia marcescens: an outbreak experience

One year ago, I had one of the worst experiences a hospital epidemiologist can have: a Serratia marcescens outbreak in a neonatal department with a total of 21 colonized or infected newborns. This outbreak caused headlines in all national TV channels and newspapers for at least one week in Germany. What happened? On October 8th, we identified two newborns with S. marcescens bloodstream infectio...

Serratia Marcescens outbreak on a general pediatric ward in Benin

Methods 6-months surveillance was conducted in the pediatric unit in Benin, from June 15 to December 15, 2009. We examined various specimenobtained from hospitalized children and 940 samples taken from hands of medical personnel, and various hospital surfaces for Serratia marcescens presence. Susceptibilities against antimicrobial agents were tested by the disk diffusion method according to NCC...

Investigation of an outbreak of Serratia marcescens in a neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND Serratia marcescens is a well-known but relatively uncommon cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients. We investigated an outbreak of S marcescens in the NICU at the Farabi Hospital of Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon, Turkey. METHODS Between March 21 and May 27, 2006, nine of the neonates were identified with cultures of ...

An outbreak of Serratia marcescens septicemia in neonates.

Serratia marcescens is a well recognized nosocomial pathogen. We report an outbreak with this organism in 8 neonates in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Seven cases were treated successfully with meropenem after the failure of imipenem treatment. Although they have similar anti-microbial effects, meropenem can effectively treat the S. marcescens sepsis resistant to imipenem.

Chitinases from Serratia marcescens

Serratia marcescens is one of the most effective bacteria for degradation of chitin, a 1,4-β-linked polymer of N-acetyl-β-Dglucosamine (GlcNAc). Chitinolysis by S. marcescens involves at least four enzymes and a chitin-binding protein. Studies of the enzymology and the structures of the enzymes provide insight in how a natural set of chitinolytic enzymes may be built up. S. marcescens chitinase...
