چکیده
conclusions according to this research and prevalence of hhv-6 in children, evaluation of csf (detecting the hhv-6 dna by pcr) is recommended in patients younger than 13 months with possible encephalitis. results from a total of 114 patients, hhv-6 was detected in 10 (8.8%), 90% of which were boys with mean age 7.7 months and median of 7.5 months. no significant differences were found in clinical presentations and laboratory findings between the patients positive and negative for hhv-6. all the children had complete recovery without neurological deficit or death. objectives the aim of this study was detection of human herpesvirus-6 (hhv-6) dna in cerebrospinal fluid (csf) of patients with symptoms of possible acute encephalitis and without typical signs or symptoms of roseola infantum, using real-time polymerase chain reaction (pcr). patients and methods we studied children two years old or younger, admitted to the pediatric emergency ward with encephalitis-like symptoms. our evaluation included detection of hhv-6 in csf of these patients. after dna extraction, real-time pcr was performed with primers and a probe specific for the u22 open reading frame of both hhv-6a and b. background encephalitis is swelling and inflammation of brain, usually due to viral infection. viral encephalitis symptoms could be fever, headache, altered level of consciousness, and seizures.

BACKGROUND Encephalitis is swelling and inflammation of brain, usually due to viral infection. Viral encephalitis symptoms could be fever, headache, altered level of consciousness, and seizures. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was detection of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with symptoms of possible acute encephalitis and without typical signs or sym...
متن کاملDETECTION OF HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE TYPE B IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID OF SUSPECTED CHILDREN WITH MENINGITIS BYPCR
ABSTRACT Background: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with primers from "hpd" gene was compared with culture for the detection of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in CSF samples from children suspected of meningitis. Methods: 300 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from suspected meningitis cases were studied by culture (Leventhal & Chocolate Agar) and PCR. Results: The latter...
متن کاملHuman enteroviruses in cerebrospinal fluid of children with suspected aseptic meningitis: A study in northern Iran
Background: Enterovirus (EV) infections are one of the most common causes of aseptic meningitis in pediatrics. To diagnose EV meningitis, virus isolation in cell cultures is often time consuming and lacks sensitivity to be of clinical relevance. This makes the virus culture results difficult to interpret. The rapid detection of EVs in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by molecular diagnostic techniques...
متن کاملAssociation of pityriasis rosea with Human Herpesvirus-6
Background: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common papulosquamousskin disorder that is suspected to have an infectious etiology. We aimed to study the role of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) inthe pathogenesis of PR.Method: We used immunohistochemical (IHC) assays to detectHHV-6 in patients with PR. Fifty-one patients with PR and 35 ageand sex matched healthy control samples were enrolled in thestudy. Th...
متن کاملHuman herpesvirus 6 in cerebrospinal fluid of patients infected with HIV: frequency and clinical significance.
The objective was to evaluate the frequency of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNA detection in the CSF of patients infected with HIV and its relation to brain disease and systemic HHV-6 infection. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to analyse CSF samples from 365 consecutive HIV infected patients with neurological symptoms. When available, plasma and brain tissues from patients whose ...
متن کاملDetection of Herpes Simplex Virus Infection in Cerebrospinal Fluid
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Herpes simplex encephalitis is a life-threatening consequence of the central nervous system (CNS) infection with Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Although it is a rare disease, mortality rates reach 70% in the absence of therapy and only a minority of individuals can return to normal function. The aim of this study was to d...
