چکیده

background: the advantages of coated orthodontic wires such as esthetic and their effectson reduced friction, corrosion and allergic reaction and the signifi cant consequences of plaque accumulation on oral health encouraged us to assess bacterial colonization on these wires. materials and methods: a total of 18 (9 upper and 9 lower) epoxy resin coated 16 × 22 nickeltitanium wires (spectra, gac, usa) and 18 (9 upper and 9 lower) non-coated 16 × 22 nickel-titanium wires (sentalloy, gac, usa) with isolated packages were selected and sterilized before application. the samples were divided randomly between upper and lower arches in 18 patients and hence that every patient received one coated and one uncoated wire at the same time. samples were removed and cut in equal lengths after 3 weeks and placed in phosphate buffered saline buffer. after separation of bacteria in trypsin and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid solution, the diluted solution was cultured in blood agar and bacterial colony forming units were counted. finally, the data was analyzed using the paired t-test and the signifi cance was set at 0.05. results: mean of bacterial colonization on uncoated wires was more than that of coated wires (p < 0.001). conclusion: bacterial plaque accumulation on epoxy resin coated nickel-titanium orthodontic wires is signifi cantly lower than uncoated nickel-titanium wires. key words: bacterial colonization, coating, nickel-titanium wire

effect of postoperative amoxicillin on early bacterial colonization of peri-implant sulcus: a randomized controlled clinical trial

objectives: with side effects of antibiotics taken into consideration, the necessity of antibiotic therapy after simple implant placement procedures is still a subject of debate and the existing literature on this topic is widely controversial. the aim of this study was to assess the effect of postoperative amoxicillin therapy on early colonization of peri-implant sulcus after implant placement...

Comparison of survival time between two types of orthodontic fixed retainer: a prospective randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND The aim of this prospective clinical study was to compare the mean durability and the failure rates of two types of orthodontic retainers. METHODS Orthodontic patients (142) aged between 14 and 28 years were recruited in this study. The polyethylene woven ribbon (Ribbond, Seattle, WA, USA) retainer was compared with a 0.0175-in flexible spiral wire (Respond, Ormco, Glendora, CA, US...

Prospective randomized clinical trial to compare pain levels associated with 2 orthodontic fixed bracket systems.

INTRODUCTION In this randomized clinical trial, we compared pain levels associated with 2 fixed appliance systems during initial orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS Sixty-six patients (36 female, 30 male) were randomly allocated to either a conventional twin bracket (Tru Straight, Ormco Europe, Amersfoort, The Netherlands) or a self-ligating bracket (Damon 3, Ormco). Both arches were bonded, ...

Antibiotic coated catheter to decrease infection: pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Nosocomial catheter related bloodstream infections (CR-BSI) increase morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Central venous catheters (CVC) coated with rifampin and minocycline (RM) decrease rates of colonization and CR-BSI. However, recent trials challenged the clinical impact of such catheters. We designed this trial to compare rates of colonization and C...
