background: the incidence of dentinal defects may infl uence the outcome of root canal treatment. the aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the incidence of dentinal defects following root canal obturation with two different techniques. materials and methods: a total of 110 mesial roots of human mandibular fi rst molars were selected. twenty-seven roots were left unprepared as negative controls (ncs). the mesiobuccal canals of 83 roots were prepared using rotary instruments. twenty-seven roots were left unobturated as positive controls (pcs). twenty-eight roots were obturated with cold lateral compaction (clc) technique and the others were obturated with mechanical lateral compaction (mlc) technique. in the clc and mlc groups, spreader penetration depth was measured by an electromechanical testing machine in canals containing master gutta-percha cones. after root canal obturation, all the roots were sectioned horizontally at four levels from the apex and evaluated under a stereomicroscope at a magnifi cation of ×40. the presence of dentinal defects was noted. data were analyzed using the chi-square and t -tests. results: the number of defects was not signifi cantly different between the clc, mlc, and pc groups. the clc, mlc, and pc groups had signifi cantly more defects compared to the nc group. conclusion: according to the results of this study, the mlc and clc techniques were the same in producing dentinal defects. key words: dental internal fi t, dentin, gutta-percha, root canal obturation, tooth fractures

Mechanical or cold lateral compaction: The incidence of dentinal defects

BACKGROUND The incidence of dentinal defects may influence the outcome of root canal treatment. The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the incidence of dentinal defects following root canal obturation with two different techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 110 mesial roots of human mandibular first molars were selected. Twenty-seven roots were left unprepared as negative ...

Incidence of Dentinal Defects and Vertical Root Fractures after Endodontic Retreatment and Mechanical Cycling

Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of dentinal defects and vertical root fractures (VRFs) after endodontic retreatment and mechanical cycling (MC). Methods and Materials Two hundred mandibular premolars were selected. Forty teeth were left unprepared (control group). The remaining 160 root canals were prepared with ProTaper instruments and filled by using two dif...

Comparison of dentinal crack incidence and of post removal time resulting from post removal by ultrasonic or mechanical force.

The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency of canal and intradentin cracks after intraradicular post removal using ultrasonic instrumentation or the Gonan post removal system. Sixty cadaver teeth were divided into 4 groups of 15 teeth each: group 1, ultrasonic removal; group 2, Gonan post removal system; group 3, cemented posts not removed; and group 4, no posts. Groups 1 and 2 were...

Lateral Compaction Techniques

the influence of different lateral compaction methods for the obturation quality, as well as the time spent for the procedure. Thirty root canals of freshly extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared with the ProTaper system up to F5 instrument and filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer by the lateral compaction technique. The teeth were divided into 3 groups (n=10) in accordance wi...

Incidence of dentinal defects after root canal preparation: reciprocating versus rotary instrumentation.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of dentinal defects after root canal preparation with reciprocating instruments (Reciproc and WaveOne) and rotary instruments. METHODS One hundred human central mandibular incisors were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n = 20 teeth per group). The root canals were instrumented by using the reciprocating single-file systems Rec...

Cold, season, and incidence of bells palsy

Bell’s palsy is a relatively common disease characterized by the sudden onset of unilateral facial paralysis. Using a centralized system that contains demographic data, the authors estimated rates, trends, and demographic risk of Bell’s palsy during a 2-year period. There were 140 incident cases of Bell’s palsy among patients referring to private clinics (a total of 6500 patients). The crude in...
