چکیده
background: due to the marked increase in the burden of cancer both in the developed and developing countries, world health organization recommends planning and implementation of comprehensive cancer control program in all countries. we evaluated evolutionary progress of the population based cancer registries (pbcr), an essential component of the cancer control program. methods: we studied frequency and coverage of cancer registries worldwide in overall and stratified by regions and countries, using the data published in the cancer in five continents (ci5) volume i-ix. using the population proportion of the study unit as the weight, we estimated weighted average of the registration coverage in the studied countries and regions. results: we found that coverage of cancer registry is increasing worldwide. in overall, 224 pbcrs estimate cancer incidence in 19.6% of world population. while the coverage was almost complete in the western countries, some counties particularly in africa and asia lack even a single cancer registry. the lowest coverage was generally observed in africa (1.4%) and southeastern asia (2%). using information technology, lead to a considerable increase in the coverage of cancer registries in the us, where it increased from 14% percent in 1997 to 96% in 2002. conclusion: developing countries must prioritize establishment of cancer registration system. looking at the developed countries with well-functioning registries may help establish an efficient registration system in developing countries. using advance information technology will help achieve an efficient and optimal pbcr.

The epidemiological transition in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has given rise to a concomitant increase in the incidence of non-communicable diseases including cancers. Worldwide, cancer registries have been shown to be critical for the determination of cancer burden, conduct of research, and in the planning and implementation of cancer control measures. Cancer registration though vital is often ne...

متن کاملBreast Cancer in Ghana: Demonstrating the Need for Population-Based Cancer Registries in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Purpose Breast cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Ghanaian women. Previous studies find Ghanaian women are diagnosed at a younger age and at more advanced stages (III and IV), and have tumors with characteristics similar to African American women. We sought to remedy gaps in knowledge about breast cancer survival in Ghana and its relation to de...

INTRODUCTION Population-based cancer registries provide vital information for planning, prevention and cancer management. Information generated by the registries must be comprehensive, valid and comparable. Because of their importance, regular quality assessments are recommended. OBJECTIVE The quality of cancer incidence data were assessed at four population-based cancer registries in Colombi...

Registries have key roles in cancer incidence, mortality and survival monitoring and in showing disparities across the population. Incidence monitoring began in New South Wales in 1972 and other jurisdictions soon followed. Registry data are used to evaluate outcomes of preventive, screening, treatment and support services. They have shown decreases in cancer incidence following interventions a...

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently projected that in 2010, cancer would overtake ischemic heart disease as the leading cause of death in the world. Between 2005 – when some 7.6 million people died from cancer, accounting for 13% of global deaths – and 2015, it is anticipated that 84 million people will die of cancer. In 2008, approximately 72% of cancer deaths occurred in low and midd...
