botulinum toxin injection into inferior oblique muscle for treatment of acquired superior oblique palsy

چکیده
purpose: to evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin-a (bta) injection into the inferior oblique (io) muscle in releaving the symptoms of superior oblique (so) palsy. methods: the study was conducted on patients who were referred for acquired so palsy with less than 2 years of duration. about 10-20 unit of bta was injected into the belly of the inferior oblique muscle through the inferotemporal quadrant of the involved eye without opening the conjunctiva. results: eighteen eyes from 16 patients were injected. mean age was 33.7 years and mean duration of paresis was 6 months. trauma was the cause of paresis in 81.2%. six months after the injection, mean deviation decreased from 6.4 r to 1.9r; mean io over-activity decreased from +1.7 to +0.6; mean so upper-activity decreased from -1.5 to -0.4; mean subjective torsion decreased from 9.3º to 0.4º; and mean head tilt decreased from 8.4º to 1.1º. conclusion: botulinum toxin-a injection into the io muscle can decrease the symptoms of patients with so palsy and cause faster rehabilitation of these patients before stabilization of signs for final decision.

PURPOSE To evaluate the outcomes of botulinum toxin injection into the inferior oblique (IO) muscle for management of unilateral acute traumatic superior oblique (SO) palsy. METHODS In this prospective case series, 10-20 units of botulinum toxin A (Dysport, Ipsen, Biopharm Ltd., Wrexham, UK) was injected into the ipsilateral IO muscle of 13 consecutive patients with unilateral acute traumatic...

BACKGROUND Inferior oblique muscle overaction of variable amounts is usually present with congenital superior oblique palsy. Inferior oblique muscle anteriorization has been described as a suitable surgical procedure in this entity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of inferior oblique muscle anteriorization in patients with congenital superior oblique palsy on vertical, torsi...

PURPOSE To study size and contractility of the normal inferior oblique (IO) muscle using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to evaluate abnormalities of the superior oblique (SO) and IO muscles in chronic SO palsy. DESIGN Prospective, case control study. PARTICIPANTS Thirteen patients with SO palsy and 17 orthotropic subjects. METHODS High-resolution, surface coil MRI wa...
متن کاملLong-term results of anterior transposition of the inferior oblique muscle in superior oblique palsy
To evaluate the long-term surgical outcomes of anterior transposition of the inferior oblique muscle (ATIO) in the treatment of vertical deviations resulting from superior oblique palsy (SOP). We retrospectively studied seven consecutive patients who had undergone ATIO for the treatment of SOP. A follow-up of at least five years after the operation was required to be included in the study. In r...
متن کاملSuperior Rectus Muscle Recession for Residual Head Tilt after Inferior Oblique Muscle Weakening in Superior Oblique Palsy
PURPOSE Residual head tilt has been reported in patients with superior oblique muscle palsy (SOP) after surgery to weaken the inferior oblique (IO) muscle. The treatments for these patients have not received appropriate attention. In this study, we evaluated the superior rectus (SR) muscle recession as a surgical treatment. METHODS The medical records of 12 patients with SOP were retrospectiv...
