چکیده
conclusions for the first time to our knowledge, we have reported a severe retropharyngeal and upper mediastinum cellulitis, probably due to the fna procedure in an immunocompetent young woman. case presentation a thirty-five-year-old female was admitted to hospital with hoarseness, laryngeal stridor and dyspnea without fever that emerged about 3 days after a first diagnostic fna. after the procedure, the patient felt her voice became hoarse and 1 day before presentation began to have dyspnea, without fever. it had become difficult for her to swallow solids, and she felt as if food was sticking in her throat. in the emergency room, hematochemical tests and ct scan of the neck/mediastinum had been performed. this showed leukocytosis with neutrophilia and a severe cellulitis framework with involvement of the laterocervical neck area and in particular, the invasion of the retropharynx and the upper part of the mediastinum. the patient was admitted in hospital for an anti-inflammatory therapy with cortisone and antibiotic therapy. introduction fine needle aspiration (fna) is the most accurate and cost-effective method for evaluating thyroid nodules. we have reported a rare complication related to the procedure: severe retropharyngeal cellulitis.

A Rare and Severe Complication Following Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration: Retropharyngeal Cellulitis
INTRODUCTION Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the most accurate and cost-effective method for evaluating thyroid nodules. We have reported a rare complication related to the procedure: severe retropharyngeal cellulitis. CASE PRESENTATION A thirty-five-year-old female was admitted to hospital with hoarseness, laryngeal stridor and dyspnea without fever that emerged about 3 days after a first di...
متن کاملCutaneous Sinus Formation Is a Rare Complication of Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy
Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is essential in the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules. In this paper, we report a rare complication, cutaneous sinus formation, after diagnostic FNAB guided by palpation. Sixty-three-year-old female patient was admitted with the complaints of hoarseness and discharge from the anterior neck wall which were present for the last 6 months. The patient ...
متن کاملFine Needle Aspiration Cytology versus Fine Needle Capillary Sampling in Cytological Diagnosis of Thyroid Lesions
Background and Objectives: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an established out- patient procedure used in primary diagnosis of palpable thyroid lesions. A modified technique fine needle capillary sampling (FNCS) obviates the need of suction, is less painful, patient friendly and reported to overcome the problem of inadequate and bloody specimens. The aim of our study was to compare the...
متن کاملCombination of aspiration and non-aspiration fine needle biopsy for cytological diagnosis of thyroid nodules
Background: Good cytological sample is very important for the cytological diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of prepared samples by the combination of aspiration and non- aspiration fine needle biopsy. Methods: In this descriptive – analytical study, sampling was done simultaneously for each patient in fine needle aspiration and non-aspiration biops...
متن کاملFatal haemorrhage following fine needle aspiration of the thyroid.
Fine needle aspiration is routinely performed as part of the assessment of thyroid nodules. It is generally regarded as a very safe procedure, though rarely significant bleeding can occur in its aftermath. A 79-year-old female was referred for assessment of an incidental thyroid nodule which had been identified on computed tomography of the chest and extended into the retrosternal space. The pa...
متن کاملDiagnostic Importance of Fine Needle Non-aspiration and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in Thyroid Lesions
Introduction: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the routine, minimal invasive technique, and well-established baseline investigation used to diagnose the nodular thyroid lesion. The main disadvantages were an inadequate specimen or the specimen obtained was blood. To avoid these problems, a new method called as fine needle non-aspiration cytology is performed nowadays instead of FNAC. A...
