how to cite this article: wilson md. animal models of cerebral palsy: hypoxic brain injury in the newborn. iran j child neurol. spring 2015; 9(2):9-16. abstract objective hypoxic insults are implicated in the spectrum of fetal disorders, including cerebral palsy (cp). in view of the major contribution of intrapartum risk factors and prematurity to subsequent neurological morbidity and mortality in humans, this study aimed to clarify the pathophysiology of brain injury, especially periventricular white matter damage (wmd), that occur in utero to the immature and near-term fetal cns. materials & methods an evaluation of the resulting neurological and behavioural phenotype in the newborn was performed by utilising a battery of neurobehavioural tests, including the morris water-maze and the open-field test, followed by cerebral mri and histopathology. results this study used a murine model to examine the deleterious effects of wmd brought about by cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (hi) and the characteristic features of cp in mice. murine models have proven themselves valuable in the area of experimental neuroscience. conclusion hypoxia-treated mice were observed to demonstrate a significant neurofunctional deficit compared with sham mice on two behavioral measures. indeed, different brain regions, including the sensorimotor cortex, the striatum, and the hippocampus were noticeably damaged after hi insult, as determined by both mri and histopathology. these results, albeit qualitative in nature, appear to support the pre-existing finding that the long-term neurofunctional outcome in animal subjects with cp is strongly associated with the anatomical extent and pattern of cerebral damage as determined by both delayed neuroimaging and histopathology.

متن کاملAnimal models of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in the newborn.
Controversy continues over which animal model to use as a reflection of human disease states. With respect to perinatal brain disorders, scientists must contend with a disease in evolution. In that regard, the perinatal brain is at risk during a time of extremely rapid development and maturation, involving processes that are required for normal growth. Interfering with these processes, as part ...
متن کاملAnimal Models and Treatments for Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric neurodevelopmental physical disability with a prevalence of 2-5 cases for every 1000 live births. CP results from injury to the developing brain that occurs at the time surrounding birth. Although the severity and extent of CP symptoms varies among patients, all develop motor and posture disturbances which limit their activity. There is no known ...
متن کاملCyclosporine A attenuates hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in newborn rats.
Cyclosporine A (CsA) is neuroprotective in ischemic brain injuries of adult animals because it blocks the permeability transition of the mitochondrial membrane. In this study, we examined the neuroprotective effect of CsA on hypoxia-ischemia (HI)-induced brain injury in newborn rats. Seven-day-old Sprague-Dawley rat pups were subjected to 2h of 8% oxygen following a unilateral carotid artery li...
متن کاملBirth brain injury: etiology and prevention— Part I: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and cerebral palsy
Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a birth brain injury that precedes the development of Cerebral Palsy (CP). Visualized on MRI scanning, the lesions of HIE are infarcts resulting from deficient generalized perfusion of brain tissue. Birth asphyxia/hypoxia is the widely assumed cause of this brain injury, however, HIE may occur without significant hypoxia. Hypovolemia/hypovolemic shock, i...
