in-vitro red blood cells integrity and morphology changes after passing through volumetric peristaltic infusion pump

چکیده
background: it is not clear whether the use of volumetric peristaltic infusion pumps, affect the quality of the erythrocytes during packed cell transfusion or not. in the present study in vitro quality of red blood cells was assessed after using this type of infusion pumps in a prospective study. materials and methods: in this study 60 units of packed red cells were examined before and after passing through volumetric peristaltic infusion pumps. the shelf life of each bag was up to 7 days, and the transfusion rate was set to 40 milliliter/hour. pre- and post- infusion pump samples were analyzed for erythrocyte morphology and hemoglobin, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase and bilirubin levels. samples obtained before the blood going through the infusion pumps were considered as the reference. results: infusion pump did not significantly increased the free hemoglobin, potassium, total bilirubin and lactate dehydrogenase increment, or fragmentation of the red blood cells, compared to the reference. conclusion: due to insignificant increase in free hemoglobin caused by erythrocyte destruction after passing through the volumetric peristaltic pumps in this in-vitro study, we suggest that these pumps can be safely used for transfusion of fresh packed cells. however clinical in-vivo studies on children and neonates are strongly recommended to ensure the safety and effectiveness of this new method of transfusion. keywords: infusion, blood, transfusion, hemolysis, erythrocytes.

متن کاملPerformance of a linear peristaltic infusion pump during red blood cells administration and the influence of infusion rates
Introduction Even with the technological development of infusion pumps, pediatric intensive care nurses are resistant to administer red blood cells (RBC) by linear peristaltic infusion pumps due to the supposed risk of cells damage, despite the need of accuracy in low flow rates. Patient safety can be compromised both by RBC quality decrease due to the pumping mechanism, as well as, by possible...
متن کاملPeristaltic infusion of red blood cells: analysis of hemolysis ratio, plasma hemoglobin and potassium levels
Introduction It is unclear whether the use of linear peristaltic infusion pumps with different propulsion mechanisms can affect the quality of red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion. We hypothesized that the mechanism of liquid propulsion, infusion rate, complete or incomplete compression of the infusion sets segment and type of pumping segment composition materials are variables that can influence...

UNLABELLED Syringe pumps are commonly used to administer therapeutic (131)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine. Here we describe our recent experience with a peristaltic infusion pump system in a pediatric setting. This method can easily accommodate infusions from several vials simultaneously and is adaptable to various types of peristaltic pump. METHODS Simple off-the-shelf components are used to vent ...

Introduction: The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of X-ray radiation on some hematological parameters, morphology of red blood cells (RBC) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) analysis of human blood using computed tomography (CT) scanner. Material and Methods: For the purpose of the study, 5 ml of wholeblood was drawn from vein puncture of 28 healthy people and div...
