چکیده
background and aims. the objectives of the present study were to investigate the prevalence and the position of enamel defects of primary teeth and hence to estimate the approximate time of an insult. material and methods. 121 children aged 3 to 5 years were included in the study. the modified developmental defects of enamel index was used to diagnose and classify the defects. the defects were categorized as hypoplasia, hypocalcification or a combination of them. each tooth was investigated for occlusal/incisal, middle, cervical, incisomiddle, cervicomiddle and complete crown defects. results. 55.37% of the children were affected by enamel defects, 23.96% being categorized as hypocalcification and 22.31% as hypoplasia. the enamel defects were more abundant in maxillary primary incisors and mandibular primary canines. minimum involvement was seen in maxillary primary second molars and mandibular primary lateral incisors. the prevalence of cervical defects in maxillary primary incisors was significantly more than the middle or incisal defects (p < 0.05). the prevalence of incisal defects in mandibular primary incisors was significantly more than the middle or cervical defects (p < 0.05). conclusions. the results revealed a considerable number of enamel defects which are multiple, symmetric and chronologically accordant with the estimated neonatal line in primary teeth of healthy children.

متن کاملManagement of developmental enamel defects in the primary dentition.
This study attempted to identify appropriate materials for restoration of enamel defects in the primary dentition, which were classified by severity and region with the modified developmental defects of enamel index. To identify the most appropriate materials, we used restorative materials to protect teeth and evaluated clinical outcomes of restoration. Three materials were used for restoration...
متن کاملEnamel defects of the primary dentition and osteopenia of prematurity.
Enamel formation (amelogenesis) in the human dentition begins in utero. The process has been investigated widely in the primary dentition in animals, and to a much lesser extent in humans. Studies have confirmed that amelogenesis occurs in distinct stages. 1 Each of these stages may be affected by extreme systemic physiological changes with hypoplasia, hypomineralization, or opacities of enamel...
متن کاملEnamel Defects in the Permanent Dentition: Prevalence and Etiology
The prevalence of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in the permanent dentition in developed countries has been reported to be in the range of 9–68 % and with no gender predilection. Several etiological factors have been implicated as being responsible for DDE in the permanent teeth. Although local, systemic, genetic or environmental factors have been attributed to DDE frequently they are li...
متن کاملAssessing the effect of fluoride varnish on early enamel carious lesions in the primary dentition.
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fluoride varnish on enamel caries progression in the primary dentition. METHODS One hundred forty-two children in Head Start schools (3 to 5 years old) were randomized into the varnish and control groups. Children in the varnish group received fluoride varnish (Duraphat, Colgate-Palmolive Co.) at baseline and after four months, an...
متن کاملDevelopmental defects of enamel in primary teeth and association with early life course events: a study of 6–36 month old children in Manyara, Tanzania
BACKGROUND Children with low birth weight show an increased prevalence of developmental defects of enamel in the primary dentition that subsequently may predispose to early childhood caries (ECC).Focusing 6-36 months old, the purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of enamel defects in the primary dentition and identify influences of early life course factors; socio-demographics, birt...
