overexpression of p53 protein in malignant breast tumors: an immunohistochemical study
نویسندگان
چکیده
the p53 protein is expressed in all normal cells and appears to function in cell cycle regulation. abnormally higli levels of the protein are found in many different types of cancer. in breast cancer, overexpression of p53 is associated with point mutations within highly conserved regions of the p53 gene. these altered genes encode stable p53 protein that can be detected by standard immunohistochemical techniques. in this study, we examined 47 cases of primary breast carcinoma for the presence of p53 protein using immunohistochemistry methods employing monoclonal antibody against the clone, do-7. of these specimens, 25.5% had widespread overexpression of p53. a significant positive correlation waz found between p53 overexpression andyounger age (p<0.05). there was a tendency for p53 overexpression in premenopausal women and the higher tumor grades, although! these did not acheive significance. the p53 overexpressoin was not correlated with tumor size, tumor type, nodal status and side of involved breast. the overexpressoin ofp53 may itself be a prognostic factor in human breast cancer.

Authors performed an immunohistochemical analysis using monoclonal antibody to p53 protein on 15 cases of benign and malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast along with a review of other conventional clinicopathological parameters to investigate the meaning of p53 expression. The cases were composed of 8 benign and 7 malignant lesions. The pattern of p53 expression showed a statistically signifi...
متن کاملAn Immunohistochemical Study Of P63 Protein Expression In Meningioma
Background and Objective: Histological grading has prognostic and therapeutic implications in meningioma. However, histological criteria are sometimes not fulfilled to predict the biological behavior of meningiomas. P63 gene is a novel P53 family member, known as tumor suppressor factor, with multiple isoforms and shows high expression in many normal and neoplastic human tissues. In this stu...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical Evaluation of Human p53 Tumor Suppressor Protein Content in Ductal Carcinoma in Situ of the Breast
The focus of this study was to determine if early detection of mutant p53 accumulation may be an early indicator of tumor aggressiveness and transformation to invasive breast cancer. For this purpose, the p53 content of 100 human breast biopsies classified as ductal carcinoma (DCIS), was evaluated by immunohistochemical method. All specimens were microscopically classified into histologic types...
متن کاملMutations in p53, p53 protein overexpression and breast cancer survival
p53 is an important tumour suppressor gene that encodes p53 protein, a molecule involved in cell cycle regulation and has been inconsistently linked to breast cancer survival. Using archived tumour tissue from a population-based sample of 859 women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1996 and 1997, we determined p53 mutations in exons 5-8 and p53 protein overexpression. We examined the associa...
متن کاملImmunohistochemical analysis of p53 protein expression in benign and malignant skin tumors using a panel of anti-p53 antibodies.
The expression of p53 in a variety of benign and malignant skin lesions has been first assessed in frozen sections and then compared with the results obtained in corresponding paraffin-embedded sections using various immunohistochemical staining methods with a panel of anti-p53 antibodies. Of the 48 benign and malignant skin lesions studied, 46(96%) had corresponding paraffin sections and immun...

AIMS To study the overexpression of p53 protein in Barrett's oesophagus with adenocarcinoma, and to correlate this expression with the pathological features of Barrett's syndrome. METHODS Immunohistochemical staining was performed on frozen sections with a monoclonal antibody directed against wild type and mutated p53 protein (Pab 1801). Eleven cases of Barrett's adenocarcinoma were studied, ...
