mental causation

چکیده
the problem of mental causation was one of the most important problems in philosophy of mind at least from the time of descartes. since cartesian philosophers found the causal interaction of the soul and the body problematic, they explained away the direct relation between the soul and the body in different ways. however, the problem was not resolved in contemporary philosophy of mind when the idea of a cartesian immaterial soul was abandoned. if we count the mind-body problem as the most basic problem in the contemporary philosophy of mind, the problem of mental causation would be one of its main forms. with cartesian dualism, the problem would be that of the causal interaction between the two different substances of the body and the soul, and with physicalism, the problem would be how the mind can exert its causal forces in a wholly physical world. philosophers proposed different solutions to the problem on the basis of their views of causation and the nature of mind, some of which will be dealt with in this paper.

Causation and Mental Causation
How the mind of a human being can determine the bodily spirits [i.e., the fluids in the nerves, muscles, etc.] in producing voluntary actions, being only a thinking substance. For it appears that all determination of movement is produced by the pushing of the thing being moved, by the manner in which it is pushed by that which moves it, or else by the qualification and figure of the surface of ...

Classical mechanics is formulated without reference to conscious experience. Quantum mechanics, in contrast, is, both by design, and in actual practice, a theory of relationships between the actions we choose and the consequences we experience. The theory includes not only laws that define a continuous evolution described in purely physical terms, but also an elaborate theoretical machinery tha...
متن کاملMental causation and mental properties†
The aim of this paper is to defend the causal homogeneity of functional, mental properties against Kim’s attack. It is argued that (a) token identity is sufficient for mental causation, that (b) token identity implies a sort of functional reduction, but that (c) nonetheless functional, mental properties can be causally homogeneous despite being multiply realizable: multiple composition is suffi...
متن کاملMental Models and Causation
The theory of mental models accounts for the meanings of causal relations in daily life. They refer to seven temporallyordered deterministic relations between possibilities, which include causes, prevents, and enables. Various factors— forces, mechanisms, interventions— can enter into the interpretation of causal assertions, but they are not part of their core meanings. Mental models represent ...
متن کاملAgency and Mental Causation
A self or person does not appear to be identifiable with his or her organic body, nor with any part of it, such as the brain; and yet selves seem to be agents, capable of bringing about physical events (such as bodily movements) as causal consequences of certain of their conscious mental states. How is this possible in a universe in which, it appears, every physical event has a sufficient cause...
متن کاملMental Causation: Compulsion by Reason
The standard paradigm for mental causation is a person’s acting for a reason. Something happens she intentionally φ’s the occurrence of which we explain by citing a relevant belief or desire. In the present context, I simply take for granted the following two conditions on the appropriateness of this explanation. First, the agent φ’s because she believes/desires what we say she does, where this...
