چکیده
real mathematicians contribution to architecture creation has been a controversial issue of scientific and architectural studies in islamic era. according to the related documents, with development of constructive activities and need to mathematics in the first centuries, mathematicians give architects and craftsmen advices in some mathematical problems. mathematicians, supervision of some government buildings, became the mediators of applying more precious mathematics among those involved in architecture and handcrafts till 4th /10th century. since 5th/11th century, the architects’ mathematical knowledge increased as well as their crucial role of them strengthens. it was the same time that mathematicians ‘role impressively decreased except in practical use of arithmetic in construction (his?b i abn?ya). this paper presents a descriptive model of mathematicians' role and their mathematical applications in the process of architectural development with regard to historical documents from 2th to 11th century. the model indicates that in the first centuries, mathematicians despite participating in the urban design and planning, water structures, his?b i abn?ya and use of astronomy in architecture, didn’t have any significant role in architectural design and creating geometric patterns during this era.

متن کاملA Mathematician Reads
New York University mathematical physicist Alan Sokal published in the postmodern humanities journal Social Text a parody entitled “Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity” [1]. His point in doing so was to test whether the field of “cultural studies of science” was seriously lacking in “intellectual standards”. His article is nonsense from start to...
متن کاملTo an unknown mathematician!
It is said in the New Testament that the apostle Paul, when addressing the Athenians, complimented them for having inscribed “To an unknown god” onto one of their altars. Reading the Babylonian tablet YBC 7289 (Yale Babylonian Collection), one might well be tempted to erect another altar to this unknown mathematician who, nearly four thousand years ago, engraved into clay what is for us one of ...
متن کاملDavid Rittenhouse: Modern Mathematician
O n the surface it seems implausible that a colonial scientist could be characterized as a mathematician by today’s standards. Yet the single aim of this note is to provide evidence that two of David Rittenhouse’s papers from 220 years ago qualify him as a modern analyst. Rittenhouse (1732–1796) had no formal education and never earned a degree. Except for a brief appointment as professor of as...

This paper complements McCarthy’s “The well designed child”, in part by putting it in a broader context, the space of possible well designed progeny, and in part by relating design features to development of mathematical competence. I first moved into AI in an attempt to understand myself, especially hoping to understand how I could do mathematics. Over the ensuing four decades, my interactions...
