ameliorating topsoil conditions by biosolid application for a waste landfill landscape
نویسندگان
چکیده
sanitary landfills, created for the disposal of solid waste, usually are developed into parks afterthey are closed. however, soil amelioration with organic matter is usually needed to restore fertility andpromote revegetation. sewage sludge creates a massive waste disposal problem. the use of composted sewage sludge (biosolid) as a soil conditioner might restore the soil fertility at landfill sites and simultaneously alleviate the need for sewage sludge disposal. we applied biosolid to waste landfill soil and evaluated its effects on soil properties and tree growth in a field experiment. biosolid improved soil characteristics including moisture, organic matter, and nitrogen content and also increased tree height and diameter at breast height. physiological measures, such as chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate, showed positive responses in trees grown in biosolid treatments. heavy metal concentrations in soil and tree leaves after applying compost did not differ from concentrations measured at control sites. therefore, we conclude that the use of biosolid in waste landfills would be an efficient, environmentally beneficial, and cost-effective method to restore the conditions of landfill soil for plants.

متن کاملApplication of GIS in Landfill Siting for Municipal Solid Waste
Uncontrolled growth of the urban population in developing countries in recent years has made solid waste management an important issue. Today municipal solid waste management (MSWM) is one of the most challenging issues in urban cities, which are facing a serious pollution problem due to the generation of huge quantities of solid waste. This results in development of environmentally sustainable...
متن کاملModified landfill design for sustainable waste management
Waste management, being one of the most important aspects of urban development, is gaining importance among developing nations. Landfills, which were initiated for hazardous waste management and subsequently transformed into sanitary landfills, have been the most widely adapted practice for municipal solid waste management worldwide. However, the conventional design of landfills not only fails ...
متن کاملGroundwater Pollution by Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate: A Case Study of Okhla Landfill Delhi
The large number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and the many hazardous materials which they contain pose a serious threat to both surrounding environment and human populations. Once waste is deposited at the landfill, pollution can arise from the percolation of leachate to the porous ground surface. Contamination of groundwater by such leachate renders it and the associated aquifer un...
متن کاملEstimation of landfill gas generation in a municipal solid waste disposal site by LandGEM mathematical model
Anaerobic decomposition of organic compounds in landfills is responsible for generation of greenhouse gases. The present study aimed to determine the total gas and methane emission from a landfill located in Hamedan (west of Iran) from 2011 to 2030. LandGEM 3.02 model was used to estimate the gas emission with the volumetric methane percent of 60%, production potential of 107, and methane gener...
