this work investigates the effect of the application rate and type of sludge throughout the soilcarbon cycle in a semiarid mediterranean agro-ecosystem. we study the two-year evolution of the variouspools of soil organic and inorganic carbon and their influence on soil respiration. we applied three rates (40, 80 and 160 mg/ha) of two types of sludge –aerobically and anaerobically digested sewage sludge– in a calcareous mediterranean soil. the study area is located in the southeast of madrid (spain) and is characterised by a mediterranean climate with a marked seasonal and daily contrast. we analysed soil organic carbon, co2 emissions, organic carbon fractions, soluble carbon, and inorganic carbon forms. measurements were madeat three times over two years, and bimonthly for organic carbon and co2.the results show that sludge type and rateof applicationexerta significant influence throughout the soil carbon cycle. aerobic sludge has a greater effect over the short-term. anaerobic sludge treatment appears to have less effect on the cycle at the beginning of the amendment, but is prolonged over time, as the differences with untreated soil persist even after two years. the application of organic amendments in calcareous mediterranean soils also modifies the inorganic carbon pools and greatly increases the soil soluble hydrogen carbonates. all of these results are reflected in the rates of soil co2 emissions, with the highest values recorded in soils amended with aerobic sludge. our data points to the advisability of a review of the european :union:’s recommendations regarding sludge and agriculture. we propose includinga sludge stabilization process and recommended application ratesaccording to the effects on soil biogeochemical cycles.

the effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...

Effects of sewage sludge and its biochar on soybean yield in fine-textured loess soil

Background: The application of biochar as a soil amendment has achieved popularity and has been found to improve considerably soil nutrient status and plant productivity in low fertile soils. Methods: This study used two different methods to apply sewage sludge and sewage sludge biochar with three replicates in a completely randomized block design. The experiment included (1) control, (2) mulc...

Sewage Sludge Application in Soil Improved Leafy Vegetable Growth

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of sludge application on growth rate of three leafy vegetable spinach, celery and lettuce. Treatment design in control and 0.7 mg/kg dry weight of soil. Results showed that sludge was highly effective in celery growth compare to spinach and lettuce and increased dry and fresh weight of celery significantly. Photosynthesis rate impr...

Land application of sewage sludge: A soil columns study

A column study was conducted to assess the potential Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb movement through a reconstructed soil profile to which surface composted sewage sludge was applied. Sewage sludge was mixed into the top 100 mm of each column at the rates of 357 (H), 223 (M) and 22 Mg·ha-1 (L). Treatment H was calculated according to the critical soil concentration and treatments M and L were calcul...
