چکیده
background chromosomal aberrations are one of the most common causes of mental retardation (mr). objectives in this study, in order to identify the rate of chromosomal abnormalities in idiopathic mr, 50 mr patients at a charity center in hamadan, iran, were investigated. methods fifty mentally retarded male patients without specific chromosomal abnormalities (e.g., down syndrome, fragile x syndrome, and klinefelter syndrome) were included in the study. standard cytogenetic techniques and high resolution gtg banding were performed on all the patients. results all the patients were male, with a mean age of 37.12 years. skeletal and facial abnormalities were found in 8% and 22% of patients, respectively. all the patients showed a moderate to severe level of mental retardation. none of the patients had numerical chromosome abnormalities. two out of the 50 patients (4%) demonstrated structural chromosomal abnormalities. one patient had a paracentric inversion in chromosome 1, while the other had a pericentric inversion in chromosome 2. conclusions the presence of structural chromosomal abnormalities (4%) in the studied mr patient population emphasizes the importance of cytogenetic investigation for all idiopathic mr patients.

"Idiopathic" mental retardation and new chromosomal abnormalities
Mental retardation is a heterogeneous condition, affecting 1-3% of general population. In the last few years, several emerging clinical entities have been described, due to the advent of newest genetic techniques, such as array Comparative Genomic Hybridization. The detection of cryptic microdeletion/microduplication abnormalities has allowed genotype-phenotype correlations, delineating recogni...

At a Tertiary Genetic Centre, children with mental retardation (MR) (also referred as intellectual disability) and associated developmental disabilities were investigated for genetic diagnosis which is important in prevention and genetic counseling while offering the risk of recurrence to the family. A prospective and retrospective cytogenetic study was conducted on 1760 MR cases for chromosoma...

Subtelomeric rearrangements detected in patients with idiopathic mental retardation.
A screening for submicroscopic rearrangements was performed in 111 patients with idiopathic mental retardation (MR) using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probes from the subtelomeric regions of all chromosome arms. Ten cryptic rearrangements were found (9%): five de novo deletions; one unbalanced de novo translocation; three unbalanced inherited translocations; and one unbalanced reco...

Introduction: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most prevalent genetic causes of developmental disability, representing the most frequent form of inherited severe cognitive deficit. The present study was undertaken to investigate FXS and its prevalence in moderate mentally retarded people in patients. Materials and methods: Nineteen people with moderate mental retardation (MR) who wer...
متن کاملThe use of genomic microarrays to study chromosomal abnormalities in mental retardation.
Mental retardation affects 2 to 3% of the US population. It is defined by broad criteria, including significantly subaverage intelligence, onset by age 18, and impaired function in a group of adaptive skills. A myriad of genetic and environmental causes have been described, but for approximately half of individuals diagnosed with mental retardation the molecular basis remains unknown. Genomic m...
