چکیده
background: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (sibo) may have a role in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (ibs). so, the aim of this study was to assess the association between sibo and ibs by using glucose breath test (gbt) in kerman city as the first study in iranian population. method: 107 patients with ibs and 107 healthy individualswere enrolled in our study. all the participants underwent gbt. a peak of h2 values >20 p.p.m above the basal value after glucose ingestion was considered suggestive of sibo. spss software version 17 was used for data analysis.p value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. results: of the 107 patients with ibs, 40 had positive gbt (37.4%) compared with 14 (12.1%) out of the 107 control participants( p < 0.001). dominant symptoms in patients with ibs were diarrhea in 36(33.6%), constipation in 12(11.2%), abdominal pain in 22(20.6%), bloating in 28(26.2%), and change in bowel habit in 9(8.4%) patients. there was not statistically significant difference among any of this ibs subgroups and positive gbt (p=0.44). conclusion: there is a positive association between ibs and sibo. we suggest a placebo-controlled bacterial eradication study for identifying the role of sibo in ibs.

Recent investigations in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) undergoing a breath test (BT) with lactulose, have shown inconclusive results on a possible association between IBS and a small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), as well as on the effective prevalence of SIBO in IBS patients, because of different geographic areas involved and different criteria adopted for the BT positiv...

Background: Rifaximin is an effective treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), yet long-term management has not been well studied. Patients with functional bowel symptoms were characterized by lactulose breath test (LBT), and a comprehensive approach to long-term SIBO therapy was employed. Methods: On day 0, eligible patients completed a bas...

In the last 3 decades, there has been a growing appreciation for the role of gut bacteria in gastrointestinal disease. Although inflammatory bowel disease and peptic ulcer disease have established a role for gut bacteria for more than 20 years, there is now increasing evidence that intestinal bacteria may play a role in irritable bowel syndrome as well. In this review, the current evidence for ...
متن کاملPrevalence of Fructose Malabsorption in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome After Excluding Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
Background/Aims Fructose malabsorption (FM) mimics symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and its prevalence has increased. Diagnosing FM in IBS is challenging because of its overlap with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). We assessed the prevalence of FM by comparing patients with IBS with asymptomatic control individuals after excluding SIBO using the glucose hydrogen breath t...
