چکیده

conclusions timely detection and appropriate antibiotic therapy of afbn are essential to prevent renal abscess formation. a possible diagnosis of afbn needs to be considered in all patients being treated for febrile uti. detection and surgical correction of the underlying malformation are necessary to prevent further recurrences. case presentation here we describe a case of a 4-year-old boy admitted for a febrile urinary tract infection (uti). radiological investigations led to a diagnosis of afbn. he was later found to also have a pre-existing malformative uropathy. introduction acute focal bacterial nephritis (afbn), previously called acute lobar nephronia, is a rare form of interstitial bacterial nephritis in children. the majority of patients with afbn have an underlying urinary tract abnormality. timely initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy can prevent abscess formation and help avoid the need for invasive surgical procedures.

Acute focal bacterial nephritis.

In the kidney, acute focal parenchymal infection without liquefaction can produce a 'mass lesion' that may mimic an abscess or tumour, both clinically and radiologically. Ultrasound and computed tomography can differentiate between these lesions and allow appropriate antibiotic treatment to be used safely, avoiding unnecessary surgical intervention.

Acute focal bacterial nephritis developed in a healthy child.

Acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN) is a rare cause of interstitial bacterial nephritis. Ultrasound identifies AFBN as a hypoechogenic and hypoperfused parenchymal lesion, which requires its differentiation from renal abscess and tumor. Hematogenous spread or ascending infection arising from the lower urinary tract is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of AFBN. Herein, a six-year-old...

Vesicoureteric reflux in children.

Vesicoureteric reflux is defined as the retrograde passage of urine from the bladder into one or both ureters and often up to the kidneys, and mainly affects babies and infants. In severe cases dilatation of the ureter, renal pelvis, and calyces might be seen. Traditionally it was thought that only a low percentage of children have vesicoureteric reflux, but studies have suggested as many as 25...
