Yukon ice patches: Bryophyte generation from ancient ice-entombed assemblages

نویسندگان

چکیده

In Southwestern Yukon, ice patches have shown substantial retreat since the Little Ice Age (1600–1900 AD) in response to warming trends. These support unique alpine wetlands that formed habitats for diverse flora and fauna over millennia. With retreat, pristine bryophyte populations are exposed beneath accumulated ancient dung. Given bryophytes been survive extreme conditions including entombment can regenerate from viable cells, emergent margin dung samples Granger Gladstone were assayed regrowth potential under growth chamber conditions. Diaspore (spore/fragment) generation of species found original subfossil material was indicated 68 percent assays, emphasizing cyclical establishment patch vegetation. One oldest samples, dating 4036 calibrated years BP margin, showed remarkable diaspores Yukon form reservoirs cryopreserved biota a critical role maintaining diversity, which provides summer refuge caribou other fauna. fluctuations, bury release through time, part complex revegetation sequence regions has followed deglaciation.

High density amorphous ice from cubic ice.

Supercooled water does not behave like a simple liquid, but instead shows a number of anomalous properties. These include the diffusion coefficient [2] or the kinematic viscosity [3] which show anomalous pressure dependencies on compression up to 200MPa, whereas beyond 200 MPa the expected behaviour is observed. To explain these anomalies the second critical point hypothesis has been put forwar...

Anthropogenic signals recorded in an ice core from Eclipse Icefield, Yukon Territory, Canada

Trends in the annual flux of sulfate and nitrate in a new ice core collected at an elevation of 3017 m on Eclipse Icefield, 45 km northeast of Mt. Logan were examined to determine the effect of anthropogenic activity on precipitation chemistry in the remote northwest North American midtroposphere. The annual flux of both sulfate and nitrate at Eclipse began increasing in the 1940s, demonstratin...

Traveling slippery patches produce thickness-scale folds in ice sheets

Large, complex stratigraphic folds that rise as high as 60% of the local ice thickness have been observed in ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland. Here we show that ice deformation caused by heterogeneous and time-variable basal sliding can produce the observed structures. We do this using a thermomechanical ice sheet model in which sliding occurs when the base approaches the melting point an...

The chronology of reindeer hunting on Norway's highest ice patches

The melting of perennial ice patches globally is uncovering a fragile record of alpine activity, especially hunting and the use of mountain passes. When rescued by systematic fieldwork (glacial archaeology), this evidence opens an unprecedented window on the chronology of high-elevation activity. Recent research in Jotunheimen and surrounding mountain areas of Norway has recovered over 2000 fin...

Production of Ice Nucleation Deficient (Ice-) Mutants of the Epiphytic Strains of Erwinia herbicola

To mutate the Ice Nucleation Active (INA) gene in Erwinia herbicola strains, Tn-5 transposon carried by Psup2021 plasmid was used. This plasmid was transferred to the bacterial cells by electroporation. Electrotransformation was carried out for 2.5 ms at 1800 v and 1 mm distance between the electrodes. Polymerase chain reaction was used for determination of presence or loss of INA gene, using a...
