چکیده

Abstract We present a methodology for estimating fault geometry and utilizing the distance to shaking estimation improve accuracy of real-time estimates large earthquakes. Most earthquake early warning system currently seismic intensity with ground-motion prediction equations (GMPE) as function hypocenter distance. However, using computed from finite source model can This study proposes novel methodology, XYtracker, estimate surface projection extent intensity. For earthquakes, high-frequency ground motions tend saturate over magnitude range strongly correlate As result, this work achieve GMPE. considered three types models: point-source, line-source, rectangle-source model. found most probable parameters each by minimizing residual sum squares between observed estimated intensities. The Akaike Information Criterion selected among them. strong motion data set 2008 Wenchuan, 2011 Tohoku, 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes was used test our methodology. new method obtain ongoing rupture length direction data. selection scheme finite-source explain distribution. Results revealed that approach performed well in dimension. promote future including subduction Graphical

Space - Time Rupture Properties of Large Earthquakes

Slow earthquakes have been hypothesized to be compound events, i.e. comprised of both an ordinary earthquake and a smooth moment-release transient of longer duration. Low-frequency normal-mode based studies which support the compound event hypothesis have suggested that low-frequency source-spectra of some slow earthquakes require that the slow-component initiated before the fast component. We ...

Real-Time Estimation of Fault Rupture Extent Using Envelopes of Acceleration

We present a new strategy to estimate the geometry of a rupture on a finite fault in real time for earthquake early warning. We extend the work of Cua and Heaton who developed the virtual seismologist (VS) method (Cua, 2005), which is a Bayesian approach to seismic early warning using envelope attenuation relationships. This article extends the VS method to large earthquakes where fault finiten...

Real-Time Estimation of Fault Rupture Extent Using Near-Source versus Far-Source Classification

To estimate the fault dimension of an earthquake in real time, we present a methodology to classify seismic records into near-source or far-source records. Characteristics of ground motion, such as peak ground acceleration, have a strong correlation with the distance from a fault rupture for large earthquakes. This study analyzes peak ground motions and finds the function that best classifies n...

Recent large earthquakes near Cape Mendocino and in the Gorda plate Broadband source time functions, fault orientations, and rupture complexities

The northward migration of the Mendocino Triple Junction is associated with complex faulting within the Gorda plate and in the convergent zone between the Gorda and North American plates. This region has experienced substantial recent large earthquake activity, and quantification of these faulting processes i essential for understanding the evolution of the triple junction. Using an empirical G...
