Restricted chromosomal silencing in nucleolar dominance.
Failure of one parent's chromosomes to organize nucleoli in an interspecific hybrid is an epigenetic phenomenon known as nucleolar dominance. Selective gene silencing on a scale of millions of bp is known to be involved, but the full extent to which nucleolus organizer region (NOR)-bearing chromosomes are inactivated beyond the NORs is unknown. Aided by genome sequence data for Arabidopsis thal...
متن کاملRing XY bivalent: a new phenomenon at metaphase I of meiosis in man.
The unusual appearance of a ring XY bivalent at metaphase I of meiosis is reported in some cells of an oligospermic human male. Higher than usual frequencies of ring configuration in the XY pair were also observed during prophase I. The defect could be attributable to loss of some DNA sequences from the distal heterochromatic tip of the Y chromosome long arm.
متن کاملExtensive pairing of the XY bivalent in mouse spermatocytes as visualized by whole-mount electron microscopy.
Autosomes and sex chromosomes of mouse spermatocytes were examined during zygotene, pachytene, and diplotene by a whole-mount electron-microscope technique after cell dispersion in a detergent solution (Nonidet-P40). Zygotene, pachytene, and diplotene stages can be adequately identified in the preparations. Thus, asynchronous side-by-side pairing of homologous autosomes, some of them displaying...
متن کاملXy and Xy-ising Models
We consider the 2D J 1 −J 2 classical XY model on a square lattice. In the frustrated phase corresponding to J 2 > J 1 /2, an Ising order parameter emerges by an " order due to disorder " effect. This leads to a discrete symmetry plus the O(2) global one. We formulate the problem in a Coulomb gas language and show by a renormalization group analysis that only two phases are still possible: a lo...
