XMM - Newton observation of PG 0844 + 349

In a ∼ 20 ksec XMM-Newton observation the X-ray transient radio-quiet quasar PG 0844+349 was found in a historically high state compared to previous X-ray observations. The quasar showed a featureless spectrum with a strong soft excess over the extrapolation of a hard power law. Comptonization models or a broken power law with Γsoft ∼ 2.75, Γhard ∼ 2.25 and a break energy of Ebreak ∼ 1.35 keV r...

A Deep XMM-Newton Observation of the Quasar 3C 287

We report on an XMM-Newton observation of the z = 1.055 quasar and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) source 3C 287. Our 62.3 ks observation provides an exceptional X-ray view of a prominent member of this important subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The X-ray spectra of 3C 287 are consistent with a simple absorbed power law with a spectral index ofΓ = 1.72± 0.02. Our fits imply a bolometr...

An XMM - Newton Observation of Abell 2597

We report on a 120ks XMM-Newton observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 2597. Results from both the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) and the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) are presented. From EPIC we obtain radial profiles of temperature, density and abundance, and use these to derive cooling time and entropy. We illustrate corrections to these profiles for projection and point spre...

XMM - Newton EPIC observations of 21 low - redshift PG quasars

We present an X-ray spectral analysis of 21 low redshift quasars observed with XMM-Newton EPIC. All the sources are Palomar Green quasars with redshifts between 0.05 and 0.4 and have low Galactic absorption along the line-of-sight. A large majority of quasars in the sample (19/21) exhibit a significant soft excess below ∼ 1–1.5 keV, whilst two objects (PG1114+445 and I Zw1) show a deficit of so...

XMM - Newton First Observation in the Pleiades

We present the first results from a 40 ks Guaranteed Time XMM-Newton pointing in the Pleiades. We detect almost all early–mid dM members in the field and several very low mass (VLM) stars – including the brown dwarf (BD) candidate Roque 9 – and investigate the variation of X-ray activity levels, hardness ratios and flare frequency with spectral type down to the BD regime.
