Working Memory Impairment in Transient Ischaemic Attack: N-back as a Sensitive Measure for Detection

چکیده
Abstract Background: Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) can lead to lasting changes in brain structure and function resulting cognitive impairment. Cognitive screening tools may lack sensitivity for detecting impairments, particularly executive function, which tends be the earliest affected domain vascular Aim: In this preliminary study, we examine a working memory (WMem) task as sensitive measure of impairment TIA. Method: Patients referred TIA clinic transient neurological symptoms completed general tool (Montreal Assessment; MoCA), WMem (2-N-back) cross-sectional design. Results: patients (n = 12) showed significantly reduced performance on N-back compared diagnosed with mimic clinical conditions overlapping 16). No group differences were observed MoCA. Conclusions: Assessing provide after TIA, implications services triage further neuropsychological support, or interventions prevent dementia.

The concurrent validity of the N-back task as a working memory measure.
The N-back task is used extensively in literature as a working memory (WM) paradigm and it is increasingly used as a measure of individual differences. However, not much is known about the psychometric properties of this task and the current study aims to shed more light on this issue. We first review the current literature on the psychometric properties of the N-back task. With three experimen...
متن کاملIs the n-back task a valid neuropsychological measure for assessing working memory?
The n-back is a putative working memory task frequently used in neuroimaging research; however, literature addressing n-back use in clinical neuropsychological evaluation is sparse. We examined convergent validity of the n-back with an established measure of working memory, digit span backward. The relationship between n-back performance and scores on measures of processing speed was also exami...

Correspondence to: Dr Chambers. How is cardiac stroke diagnosed? Approximately 20% of strokes are caused by cerebral haemorrhage and 80% by infarction.1 Of the infarctions, a proportion are thrombotic and the rest as a result of emboli either from artery to artery within the cerebral circulation or from the heart or aorta. The diagnosis of a cardiac source for emboli is based to some degree on ...
متن کاملAortic Valve Fibroelastoma Masquerading as Transient Ischaemic Attack
The following paper is on a 49-year-old man who presented to accident and emergency department having experienced five hours of left-sided chest pain, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. He also reported paresthesia and an ache in the left arm. Further investigations revealed an aortic valve papillary fibroelastoma. Although histologically papillary fibroelastomas are described as ...

Dear Editor, Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) consists of an agedependent spectrum of transient ischaemic attack (TIA), cerebral infarction and haemorrhage. It is the second leading cause of death globally, and fourth in Singapore, accounting for 10% to 12% of all deaths.1 TIA is defi ned by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association as a transient episode of neurological dysfu...
