Work, Entropy Production, and Thermodynamics of Information under Protocol Constraints

چکیده
In many real-world situations, there are constraints on the ways in which a physical system can be manipulated. We investigate entropy production (EP) and extractable work involved bringing from some initial distribution p to final p?, given that set of master equations available driving protocol obeys constraints. first derive general bounds EP work, as well decomposition nonequilibrium free energy into an “accessible energy” (which extracted constraints) “inaccessible must dissipated EP). similar vein, we consider thermodynamics information presence decompose acquired measurement “accessible” “inaccessible” components. This allows us thermodynamic efficiency different measurements same system, use our framework analyze protocols subject symmetry, modularity, coarse-grained various examples including Szilard box, 2D Ising model, multiparticle flashing ratchet.9 MoreReceived 21 November 2020Revised 6 July 2021Accepted 9 August 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.11.041024Published by American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Correlations in quantum thermodynamics: Heat, work, and entropy production
We provide a characterization of energy in the form of exchanged heat and work between two interacting constituents of a closed, bipartite, correlated quantum system. By defining a binding energy we derive a consistent quantum formulation of the first law of thermodynamics, in which the role of correlations becomes evident, and this formulation reduces to the standard classical picture in relev...
متن کاملOn Entropy Production in Informational Statistical Thermodynamics
We consider the question of the existence of a generalized H-theorem in the context of the variational method in the information-theoretical approach that generates the nonequilibrium statistical operator formalism. After brie y reviewing how the latter provides mechano-statistical foundations for phenomenological irreversible thermodynamics, the socalled Informational Statistical Thermodynamic...
متن کاملNon-equilibrium thermodynamics, maximum entropy production and Earth-system evolution.
The present-day atmosphere is in a unique state far from thermodynamic equilibrium. This uniqueness is for instance reflected in the high concentration of molecular oxygen and the low relative humidity in the atmosphere. Given that the concentration of atmospheric oxygen has likely increased throughout Earth-system history, we can ask whether this trend can be generalized to a trend of Earth-sy...
متن کاملGeneralized Entropy from Mixing: Thermodynamics, Mutual Information and Symmetry Breaking
We review a new form of entropy suggested by us, with origin in mixing of states of systems due to interactions and deformations of phase cells. It is demonstrated that this nonextensive form also leads to asymmetric maximal entropy configurations unlike Shannon entropy. We discuss how, beginning with quantum entanglement of microsystems with one another and with the environment, one can obtain...
متن کاملStochastic thermodynamics and sustainable efficiency in work production.
We propose a novel definition of efficiency, valid for motors in a nonequilibrium stationary state exchanging heat and possibly other resources with an arbitrary number of reservoirs. This definition, based on a rational estimation of all irreversible effects associated with power production, is adapted to the concerns of sustainable development. Under conditions of maximum power production the...
